A comprehensive monograph on one of the world's most influential and recognizable postwar designers The uncompromising bad boy of postwar Danish design, Verner Panton created enduring icons of pop culture, beloved the world over. He broke with the Scandinavian tradition of handcrafted teak-wood furniture to pioneer the use of plastic, fibreglass, synthetic fabrics, and industrial mass production, and this thoroughly researched and exhaustively illustrated book examines Panton's ground-breaking approach to environments, systems, patterns and color. Panton's oeuvre is a truly pioneering achievement, the wide-ranging influence of which is still felt today. Containing a wealth of images, including hand-drawn sketches by Panton, personal photographs, and advertisements from the official Panton archive, this monograph documents the astonishing breadth of Panton's work, from candlesticks and clocks to the seminal S Chair and Living Tower, to total floor-to-ceiling interiors, encompassing textiles, lighting, and furniture. This book is organized thematically with Panton's unique approach to environments, systems, and vividly illustrated patterns, and features a comprehensive, illustrated chronology of Panton's works, including many unrealized projects.

Featuring over 1700 objects by more than 500 designers and 121 manufacturers, it includes approximately 2800 images ranging from detailed object photographs to historical images documenting interiors, patents, brochures, and related works of art and architecture. The book presents selected pieces by the most important designers of the last 230 years and documents key periods in design history, including early nineteenth-century industrial furniture in bentwood and metal, Art Nouveau and Secessionist pieces and works by protagonists of classical modernism and postwar design, as well as postmodern and contemporary pieces. The Atlas of Furniture Design employed a team of more than 70 experts and features over 550 detailed texts about key objects. In-depth essays provide sociocultural and design-historical context to four historical epochs of furniture design and the pieces highlighted here, enriched by a detailed annex containing designer biographies, glossaries, and elaborate information graphics. The Atlas of Furniture Design is an indispensable resource for collectors, scholars and experts, as well as a beautifully designed object that speaks to design enthusiasts.

In addition to being a basic item of furniture to be found in any home, the chair reflects social and aesthetic changes throughout history, provides an ideal medium through which to experiment with new materials or technologies, and challenges the creativity of designers devising new ways to defy gravity's immutable laws to provide support for the human body.Through vivid photography and commentary, Just Chairs describes all facets of chairs, classic designs that have withstood the test of time to revolutionary and modern creations from young designers transforming the chair into an object of art. After a brief introductory history of the chair, this visual history features chairs designed from the world's most famous designers including Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Eileen Gray, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer, Alvar Aalto, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Arne Jacobsen, Harry Bertoia, Verner Panton, Eero Aarnio, Ettore Sottsass, Vico Magistretti, Oscar Tusquets, and others. The Vitra Design Museum Collection is one of the most important design collections in the world. It totals around 20,000 items, including 7,000 pieces of furniture, over 1,000 lighting objects and archives and estates from designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Alexander Girard. In summer 2016, the museum opened a building by architects Herzog & de Meuron to permanently present this collection: the Vitra Schaudepot. The centerpiece of the Schaudepot is a permanent exhibition of more than 400 key objects of modern furniture design from 1800 to the present. This presentation is complemented by smaller temporary exhibitions on themes related to the collection, a material library and an extensive digital catalogue. The Schaudepot constitutes the largest permanent exhibition on modern furniture design and at the same time a 'transparent design museum', making visible the work of the museum in all its facets. The publication sheds light on different aspects of the Schaudepot. The iconic building is illustrated in largescale photographs and drawings. The presentation of the collection in the interior is likewise shown using insightful imagery, augmented by a chronological overview of the exhibited objects. Short essays embed the objects within the context of design history and bring to light the curatorial decision-making behind the presented objects. The book is an attractive field guide through the history of furniture design and act as a portal to understand the Vitra Design Museum's unique collection - at the same time being the publication on one of the latest buildings by star architects Herzog & de Meuron.

Project Vitra began in 1957 in Birsfelden near Basel with the production of the furniture of Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson. Today Vitra is active and known throughout the world for its products and cultural initiatives, which are evidenced by the Vitra Design Museum, its collections, and the architecture of the firmâs own corporate campus. Vitra sees itself first and foremost as a project driven by the desire and determination to design the world. This ambition is also the driving force behind «Project Vitra», which offers an inside look at the firmâs collaboration with architects and designers, including Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alexander Girard, Tibor Kalman, Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando, SANAA, Jasper Morrison, Zaha Hadid, Hella Jongerius, Maarten Van Severen, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Jean Prouvé, Mario Bellini, Antonio Citterio, Alberto Meda, Verner Panton, Herzog and de Meuron, and many others. The copiously illustrated chapters with contributions by Alex Coles, Rolf Fehlbaum, Luis Fernández-Galiano, Deyan Sudjic, and Alexander von Vegesack tell stories about the places, people, and products connected with Vitra. This overview is rounded off by a history of the firm and a comprehensive glossary.
