DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe middle chapters of this book are given over to Wilkes County genealogy and biography, with chapters on the buyers and sellers of lots and the early settlers of the county. The work as a whole is crowded with references to ministers, officials, teachers, and soldiers, so much so that an index of more than 2,000 entries was created by Mrs. Hays to encompass them.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIt is owing to the indefatigable labors of William Armstrong Crozier that we have one of the most exhaustive lists of colonial soldiers ever published. "Virginia Colonial Militia" originally appeared as Volume II of Crozier's famous series "Virginia County Records" but has since earned a distinction that has set it apart. Certainly anyone looking for colonial Virginia origins would do well to look here first. The work is divided into several sections and includes (1) Land Bounty Certificates for Service in the French and Indian War; (2) Military Rosters in Hening's Statutes at Large; (3) Muster Rolls of Companies Defending the Frontier in Lord Dunmore's War; (4) Partial List of Officers Killed and Wounded at the Battle of Point Pleasant, Oct. 10, 1774; (5) Augusta County Militia in 1742; (6) Miscellaneous County Rosters of Militia Officers; (7) List of Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Regiment Commanded by George Washington; and (8) List of the Officers of the Colonial Militia of Spotsylvania County, 1729-1780.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKOwing to the total destruction of the county courthouse in 1869, few records of Buckingham County, Virginia survive. From documents in the Virginia State Library and the University of Virginia's Alderman Library, and from materials still in private hands, the compiler of this book has amassed a genealogical record of the county--not continuous and complete, since that would be impossible, but a rich selection of the kind of materials that would have been in the old courthouse. Highlighting the work is a collection of family sketches.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis is a basic list of the colonial soldiers of Virginia known to have been engaged in active service, including names of those who participated in the French and Indian War, the Indian Wars, Lord Dunmore's War, and various engagements and campaigns prior to the Revolution. The list was drawn from company rolls, bounty applications, the Washington Papers in the Library of Congress, Hening's Statutes at Large, and Journals of the House of Burgesses, and it is believed to represent a large proportion of the entire Virginia militia, particularly after the year 1754, when muster rolls were more carefully kept. It is believed that few members of the Virginia regiment under George Washington are unaccounted for. In all some 6,700 soldiers are identified in this work, each with references to the exact source of information.
