DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Twenty-Third Annual Report of the Indiana State Board of Agriculture, 1873, Vol. 15: Including the Proceedings of the Annual January Meeting, 1874 It is now almost twenty-three years since the Indiana State Board of Agriculture was organized, and in accordance with the requirements of the Act of the General Assembly, by which the Board was created, the Annual Report of its proceedings for the year 1873, together with the Reports from the County and District Societies, and other matter pertaining to the industrial interests of the State, are herewith respectfully submitted. During the past year the Board has abandoned, to a great extent, the usual routine of business pursued in former years, and opened up a new field of enterprise by holding an Exposition in connection with the State Fair, which claims a large share of attention in this report. The Reports of the County and District Agricultural Societies, embodied in this report, are a decided improvement over those of past years. But withal they are not complete, nor can perfection be arrived at until some way is devised to collect, officially, the agricultural statistics within the year that the products are grown. The statistical report of crops for the past year, as made up from the monthly reports of the Department of Agriculture, are but the opinion of individuals based upon calculations from the census report of 1870.
