Excerpt from Twenty-Eighth Report of the Librarian of the Maine State Library: For the Years 1897 and 1898 To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Maine: In compliance with the laws of the State, I submit to your distinguished consideration a brief report of the Maine State Library for the years 1897 and 1898. During this period the library has received as a permanent addition 4,752 volumes, a catalogued list of which will be found in this report. It will be seen that the donations to the library are diminishing yearly, but that this loss is made good by the increase of exchanges. The accessions by purchase are also somewhat less in number than during the preceding two years, the fund of the library being less and many of the books purchased having a greater cost per volume. The appropriations for the past two years have not been found sufficient to meet the increased wants and necessities of the library. Not only has there been a persistent demand for many books which we are unable to purchase on account of lack of funds, but there has been also a rapid increase in the amount of work required of the librarian and his assistant. This demand for more service is likely to increase from year to year. With the near prospect of the establishment of a system of travelling libraries in the State, and with the certainty that the number of free public libraries will double within the next four years, it becomes apparent that the working force of the library should be increased by the constant employment of a second clerk. Law Reports. There has been spent for law reports during the past two years about $4,000, and for the same period about $3,000 have been expended in the purchase of literary, historical, and scientific works. Excerpt from Twenty-Ninth Report of the Librarian of the Maine State Library: For the Years 1899 and 1900 To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives of Maine: In obedience to the requirements of the laws of the State, it becomes my duty and pleasure to lay before you a report of the Maine State Library for the years 1899-1900. Growth Of the Library. The permanent growth of the library during the past two years has been remarkable. The appropriations for that period were not up to the average amount of former years, and the amount drawn therefrom in payment for extra labor and material has been in excess of any sum used for these purposes for any like period since 1893. Notwithstanding these facts the number of books and pamphlets placed on the shelves of the library during the past two years, is six thousand two hundred and ninety-one, nearly fifteen hundred more than have been secured at any former period of two years. There have also been purchased for the traveling libraries, two thousand one hundred volumes, which really form a permanent addition to the library, for the free use of the citizens of Maine residing in distant parts of the State. This flourishing condition has been brought about by earnest work in enlarging the exchange of documents, reports, and duplicates, with other state libraries and with universities and historical associations throughout the United States.
