This book gathers the proceedings of the 12th instalment in the bi-annual Workshop series on Direct and Large Eddy Simulation (DLES), which began in 1994 and focuses on modern techniques used to simulate turbulent flows based on the partial or full resolution of the instantaneous turbulent flow structure. With the rapidly expanding capacities of modern computers, this approach has attracted more and more interest over the years and will undoubtedly be further enhanced and applied in the future. Hybrid modelling techniques based on a combination of LES and RANS approaches also fall into this category and are covered as well. The first four symposia in the series on turbulent shear flows have been held alternately in the United States and Europe with the first and third being held at universities in eastern and western States, respectively. Continuing this pattern, the Fifth Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was held at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, in August 1985. The meeting brought together more than 250 participants from around the world to present the results of new research on turbulent shear flows. It also provided a forum for lively discussions on the implications (practical or academic) of some of the papers. Nearly 100 formal papers and about 20 shorter communications in open forums were presented. In all the areas covered, the meeting helped to underline the vitality of current research into turbulent shear flows whether in experimental, theoretical or numerical studies. The present volume contains 25 of the original symposium presentations. All have been further reviewed and edited and several have been considerably extended since their first presentation. The editors believe that the selection provides papers of archival value that, at the same time, give a representative statement of current research in the four areas covered by this book: - Homogeneous and Simple Flows - Free Flows - Wall Flows - Reacting Flows Each of these sections begins with an introductory article by a distinguished worker in the field.

During the last decade, the rapid growth of knowledge in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer has resulted in many significant ad vances of interest to students, engineers, and scientists. Accordingly, a course entitled "Modern Developments in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer" was given at the University of California to present significant recent theoretical and experimental work. The course consisted of seven parts: I-Introduction; II-Hydraulic Analogy for Gas Dynamics; 111- Turbulence and Unsteady Gas Dynamics; IV-Rarefied and Radiation Gas Dynamics; V-Biological Fluid Mechanics; VI-Hypersonic and Plasma Gas Dynamics; and VII-Heat Transfer in Hypersonic Flows. The material, presented by the undersigned as course instructor and by various guest lecturers, could easily be adapted by other universities for use as a text for a one-semester senior or graduate course on the subject. Due to the extensive notes developed during the University of California course, it was decided to publish the material in three volumes, of which the present is the first. The succeeding volumes will be entitled "Selected Topics in Fluid and Bio-Fluid Mechanics" and "Introduction to Steady and Unsteady Gas Dynamics." Finally, I must express a word of appreciation to my wife Irene and to my children, Wellington Jr. and Victoria, who made it possible for me to write and edit this book in the very quiet atmosphere of our home.

Two prototype traversing boundary-layer pitot probes were demonstrated in flight. A motor-operated screw-driven type of probe was used on two jet aircraft for defining boundary layers at profile edge Mach numbers from 0.5 to 2.2. The other type of traversing probe was motor driven through a Scotch yoke mechanism and was operated on several flights of the X-15 airplane. The highest free-stream Mach number reached during this series of flights was 5. 6. The mechanical and electrical features of these probes are described, and photographs and conceptual drawings are included. Problems encountered during the development of the devices are described, and the solutions that were found are explained. Boundary-layer profile data are presented in several forms, and local friction coefficients derived from the profile through a Clauser type of determination are shown.
