"Tucumcari, New Mexico, was founded in 1901 by the Rock Island Railroad and soon had major railroad lines converging there from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Memphis as well as a northern branch line from the Dawson coalfields. As a regional railroad center, Tucumcari was the division point between the Rock Island and Southern Pacific and an isolated prairie hotbed of industrial enterprise and labor unionism. The federal highway system established Route 66, the "Main Street of America," through the middle of town in 1926. Tucumcari flourished as a tourist mecca, welcoming travelers with its blazing displays of neon lights. But mergers, reorganizations, and financial problems of the railroads as well as the creation of the interstate highway system that bypassed small places brought a sharp decline to the once-prosperous town.

Tucumcari Tonite! blends in-depth research and personal and family experiences to re-create a “memoir” of Tucumcari. Drawing on newspapers and government documents as well as business records, personal interviews, and archival holdings, Stratton weaves a poignant tale of a western town’s rise and decline—providing a prime example of the destructive forces that have been inflicted on small towns in the West and all across America.

In Slightly Slower 66, John Mulhern III writes about traveling a total of 6,094 miles in fifteen days, including eight wonderful days on Route 66 itself. The route goes through sixteen widely (and wildly!) different states including not only stops in the big cities of Chicago, Santa Fe, Los Angeles, and Denver, but also nights spent in the small cities and towns of Tucumcari, Holbrook, and Barstow. The expected adventures on the road yield to visits with friends old and new, encounters with various other Corvettes and other vehicles of interest, and more than a few great places to eat, sometimes in the most unexpected places.

It includes over 250 delicious, time-tested recipes from places like the U Drop Inn, the Covered Wagon Trading Post, the Pig Hip, and the Bungalow Inn. It is also a nostalgic recreation of the Route 66 of the past, with stories from the waitresses and cooks who poured the coffee and baked the pie. Aaron Flaherty is forced to confront his addictive personality when it nearly brings him to an untimely end. Needing real change, he decides to relocate from his native Buffalo, NY to Los Angeles, CA, tracing Historic Route 66 along the way. Before leaving, Aaron receives an encrypted, anonymous email from one of his past lovers, persuading him to follow her clues among the fascinating attractions lining Americas Main Street. Aaron deciphers the several clues along the way and finally meets the mystery woman, Maria, amidst the Santa Monica Pier. They fall ecstatically in love while traveling the coast together, and shortly afterward they engage to be married. All seems well once they settle into their new lives. However, the hidden reality behind Maria slowly manifests, and it is beyond anything Aaron could have ever imagined. The ultimate mystery for Aaron to grasp, therefore, is how the love of his life can be involved in a desperate, radical event. Like so many business partnerships along the Mother Road, their relationship is forced to reconcile the warm, charming past with the cold, hard present. Can he understand and still love her? One thing is for sure--through their suffering Aaron is transformed, allowing him to move beyond his former addictions and lead a truly fulfilling life--a life inspired by the forsaken sense of community found among the struggling small towns of the Mother Road.
