A system is loosely defined as complex if it is composed of a large number of elements, interacting with each other, and the emergent global dynamics is qualitatively different from the dynamics of each one of the parts. The global dynamics may be either ordered or chaotic and among the most interesting emergent global properties are those of learning and adaptation.Complex systems, in the above sense, appear in many fields ranging from physics and technology to life and social sciences. Research in complex systems involves therefore a wide range of topics, studied in seemingly disparate fields. This calls for some effort to develop general principles and a common language so that tools developed in one field may be put to use in other fields.By collecting a few surveys of complex systems studies in physics and in technology and emphasizing their common mechanisms and interrelationships, this book attempts to contribute to the development of a common language in the sciences of complexity.Topics covered include: Integrated design in aeronautics; time and space decomposition of complex structures; complexity in electrical power networks; earthquake behaviour of structures; signal processing; fiability; use of unstable orbits in astrodynamics; dynamics of coupled oscillators; fuzziness; dark and bright solitons; neural networks; chaos and parametric perturbations; chaotic fluid dynamics; early vision and image restoration; stochastic processes in automated production lines.

The aim of this international symposium was to bring together active scientists from Central, East & West Europe working in the field of physics of continua. So 9 invited & 27 contributed lectures were delivered, & 16 posters were presented from scientists of 12 European countries. The covered fields of the symposium were thermomechanics including thermovisco-plasticity & magnetoplasticity, nonlinear & hyperbolic heat conduction processes, two-phase flow, biomechanics & mesoscopic continuum mechanics. A final discussion on the terminology of continuum physics brought closer together the different theoretical methods used in the various fields. Contents: Simulation of Percolation Through Porous Media Using Particle Dynamics (W Alda et al.); Magnetoplasticity in Nonmagnetic Crystals (V I Alshits et al.); Two-Phase One-Component System as a Continuum with an Internal Structure (Z Bilicki); Some Aspects of Nonlinear Forced Vibrations (C Drogomiretska); Thermomechanical Coupling in Viscoplasticity (P Haupt); Nonclassical Heat Transport & Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics (D Jou); Deformation & Fracture of Polymers: Relativistic Approach (G M Kerch); Acoustical Spectroscopy of Aqueous Solutions of Isopropyl Alcohol (V P Kopylchuk & A O Semenov); Liquid Crystal Theory as an Example of Mesoscopic Continuum Mechanics (C Papenfub et al.); Temperature Dependence of the Electrical Conductivity in Glasses with Two Types of Hopping Centres (J Rybicki et al.); Propagation of Disturbances Along Axial Lines of Tectonic Flows Under Conditions of Continual Destruction (I T Selezov & V B Spirtus); Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics & the Motion of Continua (J Verhas); & other papers. Readership: Scientists, researchers, engineers & postdoctoral students.

The new edition includes additional analytical methods in the classical theory of viscoelasticity. This leads to a new theory of finite linear viscoelasticity of incompressible isotropic materials. Anisotropic viscoplasticity is completely reformulated and extended to a general constitutive theory that covers crystal plasticity as a special case.

A key source to journal and conference abbreviations in the sciences. Although it focuses on chemistry, other scientific and engineering disciplines are also well represented. In addition to the abbreviation and full title, each entry also contains publishing info, title changes, language and frequency of publication, and libraries owning that title. Over 130,000 entries representing more than 70,000 publications dating back to 1907 are included.
