Excerpt from Treat Seed Grain Use a full-strength copper carbonate dust (about 50 percent copper), manufactured especially for seed treat ment. Apply to well-cleaned seed, at the rate of 2 to ounces per bushel. Mix the seed and the dust in a tight mixing machine (figs. 6, 7, and 8) until every kernel is thoroughly covered with the dust. Seed thus treated may be stored indefinitely until sown, without injury to ger mination. With this chemical, care must be used to avoid damage to the grain drill; In damp or wet weather there is sometimes a tendency for the treated seed to cake in the drill when standing overnight or longer. In such cases it is advisable to rock the drill wheels back and forth before starting in order to avoid breaking or. Bend ing the working parts. All working parts should be kept well oiled. To avoid corrosion the drill should be well cleaned outwhen seeding is completed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Studies on the Chemical Seed Treatment of Grasses: A Thesis It soon replaced copper sulphate and became quite popular due to its cheapness and effectiveness. Its main disad vantage was that, while controlling covered smuts of cereals, it tended to injure the seed rather seriously. Even today it is, perhaps, the most widely used chemical for the treat ment of seed grain in western Canada. Excerpt from Seed-Grain for Thought and Discussion, Vol. 1: A Compilation The book opens with a few passages from the Holy Living. Then man is considered in the relations of which he is -the object, as the receiver of a Father's love, and under education in a Divine School. It is then shown how by Reason, Faith, and the higher Instincts, he apprehends these teachings. By his Spiritual nature he is drawn to the Infinite One, and lives in the Unseen by his Moral nature he seeks and learns what is right in life and action. The Third Part treats of Happiness and Life; of man as active not passive in his highest relations; of the duties he owes to his Creator, to himself, and to other men, and of the virtues demanded by these three relations; of temptations; and of the cure of faults. Excerpt from Single-Bath Hot-Water and Stem Treatments of Seed Wheat for the Control of Loose Smut Table 2 shows that by the single-bath method complete smut con trol was obtained by soaking the seed at 48° C. For 2 hours and for 2 hours and 30 minutes, and at 49° C. For 2 hours. Only very slight traces of smut were found when the seed was soaked at 49° C. For 1 hour and 30 minutes, and at 50° C. For 1 hour and 15 minutes. The summary of results obtained in 1920 - 21 indicates that the single-bath method can be used successfully to control loose smut with less injury to the seed than is caused by the modified hot-water treatment, as noted by Humphrey and Potter At 48° C. The optimum duration of treatment for the control of smut without seed Injury evidently lies between 1 hour and 30 minutes and 2 hours, and at 49° C. It is slightly above 1 hour and 30 minutes. At tempera tures above 49° C. Germination was considerably reduced, even when the seed was not soaked for a sufficient length of time to control the smut completely. Excerpt from Effect of Storage on Yields of Farm Seed Treated for Disease Control: Wheat, Oats, Barley, Corn C arm - Several types of experiments with treated corn were con ducted during the last nine years to determine the effects of different storage conditions on subsequent yields of the planted seed. Lots Of seed were stored in a moderately heated building while other lots were stored in an open shed. Some seed was sealed air-tight in quart jars. Several organic mercury disinfectants were applied. Only one rate of application, about ounces a bushel, was used, but the periods of storage ranged from one day to one year. Some of the treated corn was stored with moisture contents of 17, 15, and 12 percent. Contrary to results with seed of small grain, seed corn was not injured when the same rate of mercurial disinfectant was applied one year before sowing as was applied when the seed was treated and stored for one day. Corn grown from seed stored at 17 and at 15 per cent moisture produced yields inferior to corn grown from seed stored at 12 percent moisture. Since this was true whether the seed was treated or untreated, the difference in yield was apparently not due to the combined action of the moisture and the disinfectant but to the effect of the moisture alone. Excerpt from The Wind Dissemination of the Spores of Bunt or Stinking Smut of Wheat The wide-spread occurrence of a fungous disease points to an effective dissemination, either natural or artificial. Fun gous troubles may be seed-home, or they may be disseminated by wind, water, insects, birds or other animals or by the com mercial or agricultural practices of man. Since early times the stinking smut of wheat has been recognized as one of the most important seed-borne diseases, and seed treatment with fungicides has generally been effective in its control. The fail ure to secure the desired relief by seed treatment naturally sug gests some other general method of dissemination aside from the use of infected seed. Work was begun on this phase of the smut problem in the summer of 1915 and has been continued up to the present time. Before presenting this work, a brief state ment will be made concerning the general methods of dis semination of the smut fungi of. Cereals and the time when infection takes place.
