Excerpt from Traditions of Lancashire, Vol. 1 of 2 A native of Lancashire, and residing there during the greater part of his life, he has been enabled to collect a mass of local traditions, now fast dying from the memories of the inhabitants. It is his object to perpetuate these interesting relics of the past, and to present them in a form that may be generally acceptable, divested of the dust and dross in which the originals are but too often disfigured, so as to appear worthless and uninviting. Excerpt from Traditions of Lancashire, Vol. 2 of 2 The ancient corn-mill was here situated, just below the mansion. From the Grist Yate, by the main road to Roch dale, a winding horse-way, paved with stones set on edge, led down the steep bank and pointed to the sequestered spot where for ages the clack of the hopper and the plash of the mill wheel had usurped a noisy and undisputed possession. Excerpt from Popular Traditions of Lancashire, Vol. 1 of 3 Under the title of Traditions of Lancashire, the Author of these volumes published, in the year 1829, a collection of popular tales current in that county, illustrative, in a peculiar manner, of its history. It was so favourably re ceived that a second edition was almost immediately called for, and after some delay published. A Second Series also, in two volumes, which followed them in 1831, met with success equally satisfactory. Both works were noticed in highly flattering terms by the leading journals, and by Sir Walter Scott, whose approbation is no common eulogy, in his Tales of the Crusaders, and in his history of Demon ology and Witchcraft. But the cost of these publications, arising from the expensive nature of their illustrations, was much too high to allow of their becoming as gene rally known, perhaps, as the Author could have desired. It was intimated to him that no production could have a stronger claim upon the English reader than a series of the genuine and popular tales of England, such as he had commenced. Excerpt from Popular Traditions of Lancashire, Vol. 2 of 3 Eventide was then drawing on, but the falcon had not been loosed to the game; the usual tokens of success were wanting - 110 torn and bloody carcasses announced an abun dant sport. Two or three of the brethren were sitting on a bench in the gateway. In passing by, the foremost of the strangers hastily addressed his follower. Ralph Newcome, plague on thee hast thou had another call at the wallet? Thou guzzling tinder-throat, thy drouth is never slaked 1. Excerpt from Lancashire Legends: Selected From Roby's "Traditions of Lancashire" Our hope in preparing this volume has been to bring back to Lancashire people a portion of a book which ought, we believe, to be familiar to them. We have not hesitated to abridge many passages and to recast others. Roby's style, generally digni fied and even beautiful at times, is often too slow and too diffuse: he uses too many words, and his words are frequently too long. We have thought that even for studious and leisurely readers the stories might gain point and power if they were made shorter; and we have had it, as part of our ambition, to attract readers, who being young may be neither studious nor leisurely; and these we trust will forgive us for what we have done, and thank Roby for what he did long ago.
