Uniquely illustrating how drugs and lack of security on the water are a threat to our national security, a compelling account using our nation’s rivers. Seeing the dangers of river traffic, understanding the awesome power of water, and being inspired by the Oklahoma City bombing; the author paints a vivid account of a very realistic and unique possibility. The book is written is a Tom Clancy style yet includes elements of humor, notions of “honor among thieves” and personal integrity. The author is a mariner who has worked with towboats and barge traffic for eighteen years, and gives the “land lubber” a glimpse into the lifestyle of a typical “river rat”. The book begins with a prologue to help the reader understand how maritime river trade works. It sets off by drawing the reader into the life of one particular mariner, and follows him through some bad personal choices until he is found stuck in a terrible situation, and unwittingly sets into motion a domestic terrorism plan that devastates thousands of people and wipes out one of the countries premier cities. An epilogue sums up life for the characters after the crisis.

My name is Jake Tama. Well, Captain Jacob Ezekiel Tama, if you want to get formal. I'm a riverboat captain, and I have been around rivers all my life. Oh, I did spend some time on the ocean in the Navy. Then sixteen years as a policeman-homicide, mostly. But even then I drove boats. Then I bought my own excursion boat, and the business was good. And that is where my problem started -- crime, murders, mostly. Everywhere I go something happens to get me drawn into resolving a mystery, even worse than when I was a cop. I was even accused of committing murder. Then I was almost a victim. And yes, I've had a few romances along the way. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Just read the book!

America is a target; the homeland is under threat. While Americans have been targets of terrorist attacks for quite some time, September 11, 2001, awoke the nation to the reality that we are vulnerable in our homes, our places of work and worship, and our means of public transportation. And yet, we must continue to function as best we can as the world's most vibrant economic and political community. The current threat environment requires greater engagement with the public, as the necessary eyes and ears of the nation's homeland security infrastructure. However, to be effective, the public must be equipped with the knowledge of where and why specific locations and activities may be a terrorist target, what is being done to protect those targets, and how they can help. This three-volume set answers that need. The chapters of each volume of Homeland Security revolve around a core of central questions. Are we safer today than we were pre-9/11? What steps have been taken in all these areas to protect ourselves? What are the threats we face, and what new threats have developed since 9/11? Are we staying one step ahead of those who wish to do us harm? In 2002, more than 400 million people, 122 million cars, 11 million trucks, 2.4 million freight cars, and 8 million containers entered the United States. Nearly 60,000 vessels entered the United States at its 301 ports of entry. Clearly the amount of activity this represents will require a long-term commitment to innovation, organizational learning, and public vigilance to complement an already overstretched network of government agencies and security professionals.

This book uses a cross-disciplinary approach to examine the creation, development, ideology, and practice of the Marxist terrorist group 17N. Were the members of 17N individuals with high moral principles, as they claimed, who did their best to protect the civilians who happened to be within their field of operations? Or were they simply violent guerillas who prioritized successful assassinations of their targets at any cost? The textual analysis of this book addresses these questions and studies 17N from inception to the time when its members were arrested, providing a uniquely thorough examination of the organization manifestos and its correlation to the group's ideology and actual practices. 17N's Philosophy of Terror: An Analysis of the 17 November Revolutionary Organization first outlines the political and ideological framework of 17? and then describes their terrorist strategy and tactics. The authors consider these operations in the context of the manifestos that followed the terrorist acts, and conclude the work by addressing the events following the apprehension of 17N members—the trial, the verdicts, the appeal trial, and the conclusion of appeal trial.
