1) Our ARM book series The ARM CPU is licensed and produced by hundreds of companies. The ARM Assembly language instructions and architectures are standardized and all the licensees must follow them. The first volume of this series (ARM Assembly Language Programming & Architecture by Mazidi & Naimi) covers the Assembly language programming, instructions, and architecture of the ARM and can be used with any ARM chip, regardless of the chip maker. Since the licensees are free to design and implement their own peripherals, the peripherals of ARM chips vary greatly among the licensees. For this reason, we have dedicated a separate volume to each licensee. This volume covers the peripheral programming of Texas Instruments (TI) ARM Tiva C series. Throughout the book, we use C language to program the Tiva C Series TM4C123G chip peripherals. We use TM4C123G LaunchPad(TM) Evaluation Kit which is based on ARM(R) Cortex(R)-M4F MCU. See our website for tutorials and support materials: http: //www.MicroDigitalEd.com/ARM/TI_ARM_books.htm 2) Who will use our ARM textbooks? The primary audience of our textbook on ARM is undergraduate and graduate engineering students in Electrical and Computer Engineering departments. We assume no background in microcontroller and embedded systems programming. It can also be used by embedded system programmers who want to move away from 8- and 16-bit legacy chips such as the 8051, AVR, PIC, and HCS08/12 family of microcontrollers to ARM. Designers of the x86-based systems wanting to design ARM-based embedded systems can also benefit from this series. The book presents laboratory experiments concerning ARM microcontrollers, and discusses the architecture of the Tiva Cortex-M4 ARM microcontrollers from Texas Instruments, describing various ways of programming them. Given the meager peripherals and sensors available on the kit, the authors describe the design of Padma – a circuit board with a large set of peripherals and sensors that connects to the Tiva Launchpad and exploits the Tiva microcontroller family’s on-chip features. ARM microcontrollers, which are classified as 32-bit devices, are currently the most popular of all microcontrollers. They cover a wide range of applications that extend from traditional 8-bit devices to 32-bit devices. Of the various ARM subfamilies, Cortex-M4 is a middle-level microcontroller that lends itself well to data acquisition and control as well as digital signal manipulation applications. Given the prominence of ARM microcontrollers, it is important that they should be incorporated in academic curriculums. However, there is a lack of up-to-date teaching material – textbooks and comprehensive laboratory manuals. In this book each of the microcontroller’s resources – digital input and output, timers and counters, serial communication channels, analog-to-digital conversion, interrupt structure and power management features – are addressed in a set of more than 70 experiments to help teach a full semester course on these microcontrollers. Beyond these physical interfacing exercises, it describes an inexpensive BoB (break out board) that allows students to learn how to design and build standalone projects, as well a number of illustrative projects.

This book covers the peripheral programming of the STM32 Arm chip. Throughout this book, we use C language to program the STM32F4xx chip peripherals such as I/O ports, ADCs, Timers, DACs, SPIs, I2Cs and UARTs. We use STM32F446RE NUCLEO Development Board which is based on ARM(R) Cortex(R)-M4 MCU. Volume 1 of this series is dedicated to Arm Assembly Language Programming and Architecture. See our website for other titles in this series: www.MicroDigitalEd.com You can also find the tutorials, source codes, PowerPoints and other support materials for this book on our website.

To write programs for Arm microcontrollers, you need to know both Assembly and C languages. The book covers Assembly language programming for Cortex-M series using Thumb-2. Now, most of the Arm Microcontrollers use the Thumb-2 instruction set. The ARM Thumb-2 Assembly language is standard regardless of who makes the chip. However, the ARM licensees are free to implement the on-chip peripheral (ADC, Timers, I/O, etc.) as they choose. Since the ARM peripherals are not standard among the various vendors, we have dedicated a separate book to each vendor. Some of them are: TI Tiva ARM Programming For Embedded Systems: Programming ARM Cortex-M4 TM4C123G with C (Mazidi & Naimi Arm Series)TI MSP432 ARM Programming for Embedded Systems (Mazidi & Naimi Arm Series)The STM32F103 Arm Microcontroller and Embedded Systems: Using Assembly and C (Mazidi & Naimi Arm Series)STM32 Arm Programming for Embedded SystemsAtmel ARM Programming for Embedded Systems For more information see the following websites: www.NicerLand.comwww.MicroDigitalEd.com

Who uses ARM? Currently ARM CPU is licensed and produced by more than 200 companies and is the dominant CPU chip in both cell phones and tablets. Given its RISC architecture and powerful 32-bit instructions set, it can be used for both 8-bit and 32-bit embedded products. The ARM corp. has already defined the 64-bit instruction extension and for that reason many Laptop and Server manufactures are introducing ARM-based Laptop and Servers. Who will use our textbook? This book is intended for both academic and industry readers. If you are using this book for a university course, the support materials and tutorials can be found on www.MicroDigitalEd.com.
