D. Harlan Wilson returns with another ferociously mindbending collection of short fiction. Masked in absurdity, these stories reveal the horrifying and hilarious faces of everyday life. Wilson tells of egg raids, hog rippers, monk spitters, fathers who take their children to pet stores to buy them whales, sociopaths who threaten to clothesline eternity, and the simple act of the story itself becoming a means of repetitive, endless torture. Put on your goat head, hop in your hovercraft, and take a ride with a juggernaut of modern imaginative fiction.

There are worse things than the Ones Who Dwell in the Dark...Vince Marino is a dispirited sixteen-year-old, who is afflicted with anxiety panic disorder and an excessive fear of the dark. In his mind, he has nowhere else to turn but suicide. His one and only friend, Melissa, suggests he try hypnotherapy, which helped her deal with depression after her father's death. Desperate, Vince agrees. In his first session, Vince recounts a terrifying experience he had three years earlier at Goat's Head, a local haunt in his small hometown of Yucaipa. He and his then best friends, Jarrod and Ethan, went to retrieve a goat's skull that was said to hang on a barn owned by a presumed dead cult leader, Blackie Wilson. Here he encounters the Ones Who Dwell in the Dark. When Bruce McGrail, Vince's hypnotherapist, returns home that evening from work, he finds his house has been broken into by an unwelcomed visitor. A visitor that won't stay away. Bruce and his family's nightmare begins as they start to realize that there might be a connection between what now stalks them and Vince's encounter with the Ones Who Dwell in the Dark.

In this accessible ethnography of a small town in northern Mozambique, everyday cultural knowledge and behaviors about food, cooking, and eating reveal the deeply human pursuit of a nourishing life. This emerges less through the consumption of specific nutrients than it does in the affective experience of alimentation in contexts that support vitality, compassion, and generative relations. Embedded within central themes in the study of Africa south of the Sahara, the volume combines insights from philosophy and food studies to find textured layers of meaning in a seemingly simple cuisine.

TANA has many gifts and abilities that she is unaware of, and they affect the environment in not only this world but in multiple other worlds as well, per her emotional state. TANA did not go easily, nor did she want to cooperate once she was obtained. This caused multiple natural disasters and dangerous disruptions, until they retrieved the love of her life, Zinc. After Zinc and TANA are reunited, TANA agrees to cooperate, and she begins the process. When life gets your goat, bring in the herd Jennifer McGaha never expected to own a goat named Merle. Or to be setting Merle up on dates and naming his doeling Merlene. She didn't expect to be buying organic yogurt for her chickens. She never thought she would be pulling camouflage carpet off her ceiling or rescuing opossums from her barn and calling it "date night." Most importantly, Jennifer never thought she would only have $4.57 in her bank account. When Jennifer discovered that she and her husband owed back taxes—a lot of back taxes—her world changed. Now desperate to save money, they foreclosed on their beloved suburban home and moved their family to a one-hundred-year-old cabin in a North Carolina holler. Soon enough, Jennifer's life began to more closely resemble her Appalachian ancestors than her upper-middle-class upbringing. But what started as a last-ditch effort to settle debts became a journey that revealed both the joys and challenges of living close to the land. Told with bold wit, unflinching honesty, and a firm foot in the traditions of Appalachia, Flat Broke with Two Goats blends stories of homesteading with the journey of two people rediscovering the true meaning of home.
