This practical, user-friendly resource helps students successfully complete an evaluation capstone: a dissertation, thesis, or culminating project where a student conducts an evaluation as their capstone experience. Authors Tamara M. Walser and Michael S. Trevisan present a framework to support students and faculty in maximizing student development of evaluator competencies, addressing standards of the evaluation profession, and contributing to programs and disciplinary knowledge. Their framework, and this book, is organized by six fundamentals of evaluation practice: quality; stakeholders; understanding the program; values; approaches; and maximizing evaluation use. Throughout the book they use the metaphor of the journey to depict the processes and activities a student will experience as they navigate an evaluation capstone and the six fundamentals of evaluation practice. In pursuit of a completed capstone, students grow professionally and personally, and will be in a different place when they reach the destination and the capstone journey is complete.

Undertaking Capstone and Final Year Projects in Psychology serves a seminal purpose in guiding its readers to create a capstone project. The text employs traditional and emerging methodologies and methods in order to posit an exhaustive approach that the psychology students can adopt to see their project to fruition. The text aims at fortifying the reader’s skills through the structure of its chapters as they begin to work on their capstone or final year project. The chapters collectively explore the varied aspects that are involved in the completion of a final year project, that is, beginning from the inception of the idea to laying the foundation, designing the project, analysing the data, and, finally, presenting the findings. The text guides the reader through each step and provides further guidance on approaching the idea, coming up with the research question, positioning it within the epistemological and ontological context, and constructing the theoretical framework to arrive at the optimal design solutions. The text will be useful for psychology students who are currently completing a capstone or a final year project. It is further aimed at psychology students who will subsequently be working on a project and are looking forward to gaining cognisance regarding the approach and the methodology to be adopted for the same.

Since the 1970s there has been a serious gap between fundamental biological research and its clinical application. In response to this gap the Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust instituted the General Organizational Grants program, which funded two types of awards to provide training that would bridge the bed-bench gap. These training awards fell into two categories: (1) those that provided significant opportunities for M.D.s to engage in basic research during and immediately following medical school and residency, and (2) those that provided significant clinical exposure for Ph.D.s while they were predoctoral or postdoctoral students. These grants were intended to close the widening gap between rapid advances in our understanding of the biological process and the translation of that knowledge into techniques for preventing diseases. This report examines the General Organizational Grant programs, identifies best practices, and provides observations for future philanthropic funders.
