An enterprise such as THE WORLD'S GREATEST BOOKS is to be judged from two different standpoints. It may be judged with respect to its specific achievement-the material of which it consists; or it may be judged with regard to its general utility in the scheme of literature to which it belongs. In an age which is sometimes ironically called remarkable for its commercialism, nothing has been more truly remarkable than the advancement in learning as well as in material progress; and of all the instruments that have contributed to this end, none has been more effective, perhaps, than the practical popularisation of literature.

Perhaps while reading Shakespeare you've asked yourself, What exactly is Hamlet trying to tell me? Why must he mince words and muse in lyricism and, in short, whack about the shrub? But if the Prince of Denmark had a Twitter account and an iPhone, he could tell his story in real time--and concisely! Hence the genius of Twitterature. Hatched in a dorm room at the brain trust that is the University of Chicago, Twitterature is a hilarious and irreverent re-imagining of the classics as a series of 140-character tweets from the protagonist. Providing a crash course in more than eighty of the world's best-known books, from Homer to Harry Potter, Virgil to Voltaire, Tolstoy to Twilight and Dante to The Da Vinci Code. It's the ultimate Cliffs Notes. Because as great as the classics are, who has time to read those big, long books anymore? Sample tweets: From Hamlet: WTF IS POLONIUS DOING BEHIND THE CURTAIN??? From the Harry Potter series: Oh man big tournament at my school this year!! PSYCHED! I hope nobody dies this year, and every year as if by clockwork. From The Great Gatsby: Gatsby is so emo. Who cries about his girlfriend while eating breakfast...IN THE POOL?

Excerpt from The World's Greatest Books, Vol. 2: Fiction One damp, misty March morning, I dismounted from the top of a coach in the yard of a London inn. Deliver ing my scanty baggage to a porter, I followed him to a lodging prepared for me by an acquaintance. It con sisted Of a small room in which I was to sit, and a smaller one still in which I was to sleep. Having breakfasted comfortably by a good fire, I sallied forth and easily found my way to the place I was in quest of, for it was scarcely ten minutes' walk dis tant. I was cordially received by the big man to whom some Of my productions had been sent by a kind friend, and to whom he had given me a letter Of introduction, which was respectfully read. But he informed me that he was selling his publishing business, and so could not make use of my literary help. He gave me counsel, however, especially advising me to write some evangelical tales, in the style Of the Dairyman's Daughter. AS I told him I had never heard Of that work, he said: Then, Sir, procure it by all means. Much more con versation ensued, during which the publisher told me that he purposed continuing to issue once a month his maga zine, the Oxford Review, and to this he proposed that I should attempt to contribute. As I was going away he invited me to dine with him on the ensuing Sunday. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Some of the most exceptional writers have dabbled in this form penning beautiful, unforgettable stories. In this carefully-crafted selection, we bring to you some of the greatest writers from around the world-- the iconic storytellers from America, such as Mark Twain, Kate Chopin, Virginia Woolf, the legendary Grimm brothers from Germany, to the lyrical Rabindranath Tagore from India, and the witty H H Munro from Britain. All these and many more remarkable people come together in this edition . . . and all have stories to tell. An anthology beginning with Aesop's fables-- perhaps the first stories we come across-- and ending with Virginia Woolf's gothic, thrilling ' The Haunted House', 100 World's Greatest Short Stories brings together stories short and sweet, descriptive and lengthy, and stories that can do anything-- from telling a tale to hiding its narrator, from portraying the reality to diving into pure imagination-- and are a must-read for every fiction lover."
