Excerpt from The Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 6 of 6 I had begun a drama upon this tale so far back as 1815 (the first I ever attempted, except one at thirteen years old, called Ulric and I lvz'na, which I had sense enough to burn), and had nearly completed an act, when I was interrupted by circumstances. This is somewhere amongst my papers in England; but as it has not been found, I have re-written the first, and added the subsequent acts. The whole is neither intended, nor in any shape adapted, for the stage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Works of the Rt. Hon. Lord Byron, Vol. 4 of 8 The reader will please to bear in mind (what few choose to recollect) that there is no allusion to a future state in any of the books of Moses, nor indeed in the Old Testament. For a reason for this extraordinary omission he may consult War burton's Divine Legation; whether satisfactory or not, no better has yet been assigned. I have therefore supposed it new to Cain, without, I hope, any perversion of Holy Writ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 6 of 6 Nothing so difficult as a beginning In poesy, unless perhaps the end For oftentimes when Pegasus seems winning The race, he sprains a wing, and down we tend, Like Lucifer when hurl'd from heaven for sinning Our sin the same, and hard as his to mend, Being pride, l which leads the mind to soar too far, Till our own weakness shows us what we are. Excerpt from The Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 4 of 6 The conspiracy of the Doge Marino Faliero is one of the most remarkable events in the annals of the most singular government, city, and people of modern history. It occurred in the year 1355. E very thing about Venice is, or was, extraordinary-her aspect is like a dream, and her history is like a romance. The story of this Doge is to be found in all her Chronicles, and particularly detailed in the "Lives of the Doges," by Marin Sanuto, which is given in the Appendix. It is simply and clearly related, and is perhaps more dramatic in itself than any scenes which can be founded upon the subject. Marino Faliero appears to have been a man of talents and of courage. I find him commander in chief of the land forces at the siege of Zara, where he beat the King of Hungary and his army of 80,000 men, killing 8000 men, and keeping the besieged at the same time in check; an exploit to which I know none similar in history, except that of Caesar at Alesia, and of Prince Eugene at Belgrade. He was afterwards commander of the fleet in the same war. He took Capo d'lstria. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 8 Heaven and Earth was written at Ravenna, in October, 1821. In forwarding it to Mr. Murray, in the following month, Lord Byron says En closed is a lyrical drama, entitled A Mystery.' You will find it pious enough, I trust at least some of the chorus might have been written by Sternhold and Hopkins themselves for that, and perhaps for melody. As it is longer, and more lyrical and Greek, than I intended at first, I have not divided it into acts, but called what I have sent Part first as there is a suspension of the action which may either close there without immopriety, or be continued in a way that I have in view. I wish the first part to be published before the second; because, if it don't succeed, it is better to stop there, than to go on in a fruitless experiment. Though without delay revised by Mr. Gifford, and printed, this First Part was not published till 1822, when it appeared in the second number of the Liberal. The Mystery was never com pleted.
