DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Works of Jonathan Edwards, D.D, Vol. 2 of 2: Late President of Union College, With a Memoir of His Life and Character The doctrine of the forgiveness of sins is a capital doctrine of the gospel. As it is much insisted on by the other writers of the New Testament; so it is above all, by the author of this epistle. In our text, he asserts that we are forgiven according to the riches of grace; not merely in the exercise of grace, as the very term forgiveness implies, but in the exercise of the riches of grace; importing that forgiveness is an act of the most free and abundant grace. Yet he also asserts that this gratuitous forgiveness is in consequence of a redemption by the blood of Christ. But how are these two parts of the proposition consistent? If we be in the literal sense forgiven in consequence of a redemption, we are forgiven on account of the price of redemption previously paid. How then can we be truly said to be for given; a word which implies the exercise of grace? and especially how can we be said to be forgiven according to the riches of grace? This is at least a seeming inconsistence. If our forgiveness be purchased, and the price of it be already paid, it seems to be a matter of debt, and not of grace. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Works of Jonathan Edwards, D. D, Vol. 1 of 2: Late President of Union College; With a Memoir of His Life and Character Most of the works of Dr. Edwards included in these volumes have before been published separately; and some of them, several times. But all of them have long since been out of print, so that a copy could rarely be found. At the suggestion and earnest request of many of the ablest living theologians of our country, an attempt has now been made to collect in a uniform edition all the most valuable of his writings heretofore published, with the addition of quite a number that are now for the first time edited from his manuscripts. The works which Dr. Edwards himself published in his life time, have long since placed him in the highest rank of profound reasoners and able theologians; and it is believed that those now for the first time given to the public, will not diminish, but rather add to his reputation. It may be noticed by some that the volumes are not punctuated with entire uniformity. The explanation of this is, that in reprinting from those already published, the punctuation of the former editions was mainly followed; so that the work, in this respect, is not as uniform as though it were now published entire for the first time. It should also be mentioned, that the editor residing at a distance from the place of publication, has not been able to superintend the press. This department of the work, however, has been faithfully attended to by the publishers, so that the references, etc. are probably given as accurately as they could have been under the eye of any editor whatever. DOWNLOAD EBOOKJonathan Edwards is the greatest theologian of colonial America as well as its first important philosopher. As a theologian, he represents without any concession Calvinistic Orthodoxy, re-thought and re-lived through the experience of the Great Awakening. The large majority of his writings are of a theological character, yet this theology is articulated and expressed through a systematic philosophical reflection. Edwardsian thought covers three major areas: First, being, grace, and glory; then, the doctrine of the will extending to the study of the original sin and evil; finally, an entirely original theory of knowledge synthesizing spirituality, aesthetics, and epistemology. The present book, the first edition of which appeared in French almost thirty years ago, is a uniquely comprehensive study of the work of Jonathan Edwards. It discusses all the aspects of his thought over against the background of classical Protestant theology and of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Western philosophy. Our time witnesses a significant renewal of interest in Jonathan Edwards. Professor Veto's book should prove to be a major contribution to assist and to guide the readers of "America's Theologian."

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis set of essays offers a fresh look at how Edwards's ideas were transmitted, received, and reworked in the different phases of the life of the New England Theology. They also trace the way in which his thought, and that of his intellectual progeny, had an international impact on the shape of theology in the UK, Europe, and Asia, and on present-day Reformed theology.
