While sailing has a long tradition, both as a means of transportation and as a sport, robotic sailing is a fairly new area of research. One of its unique characteristics is the use of wind for propulsion. On the one hand, this allows for long range and long term autonomy. On the other hand, the dependency on changing winds presents a serious challenge for short and long term planning, collision avoidance, and boat control. Moreover, building a robust and seaworthy sailing robot is no simple task, leading to a truly interdisciplinary engineering problem. These proceedings summarize the state of the art as presented at the International Robotic Sailing Conference 2011. Following an overview of the history of autonomous sailing a number of recent boat designs is presented, ranging from small one-design boats to vessels built to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Subsequently, various aspects of system design and validation are discussed, further highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of the field. Finally, methods for collision avoidance, localization and route planning are covered.

New book "REINVENT" shows readers means to a healthy world view. Author Mike Kinch uses his life journey from agnostic to mature Christian to create a truly challenging and inspiring read. Whoever one truly is at one's core, and what one can achieve in one's life is the direct result of one's mindset, one's belief. This shapes one's self image which outworks in one's being a fulfilled, healthy and whole or a dysfunctional human being. Question is how does one get out of this vicious downward spiral? By moving from erroneous subjective contemporary cultural convictions to a truth and Divine relationship based, transformed worldview. Kinch has found this to be the case in the Christian faith when correctly understood, applied and outworked in his life. "REINVENT" is author Mike Kinch's highly informative, life challenging and inspiring book about personal transformation that encourages readers to mature from who they are to who they could be, a better more fulfilled person. For the first twenty of his adult years, Kinch was a confirmed agnostic however in the last twenty plus, he has transformed into a mature Christian who looks to God for wisdom and guidance. Each of the thirty four chapters embraces a life principle challenging readers to address and potentially change a particular aspect of their lives. This enlightening book is filled with illustrations from his personal journey and significant quotations from various eminent thinkers. It also shows readers that life does not have to be full of despair and hopelessness. That there is hope for a better future, there is a way to get to the light at the end of the tunnel. "REINVENT" is packed with wisdom that shows readers how to become a better person, to facilitate achieving one's destiny in life and to leave a legacy for generations to come. The course keeping and manoeuvring requirements for a ship are governed by international maritime law. In assessing and predicting the course keeping and manoeuvring capabilities of the ship, knowledge is required of the rudder forces necessary to keep a course or facilitate a manoeuvre. The second edition of Marine Rudders, Hydrofoils and Control Surfaces includes up-to-date data and rudder design techniques that enable the rudder forces to be estimated, together with any interactions due to the hull and propeller. The new edition describes the design and application of hydrofoils including shape adaptive design, and their applications including hydrofoil craft, yachts, and kite surfing hydrofoils. The professional will also face the need to design control surfaces for motion control, such as roll and pitch, for surface vessels and submersibles, and the book contains the necessary techniques and data to carry out these tasks. This book is for practicing naval architects and marine engineers, small craft designers, yacht designers, hydrodynamicists, undergraduate and postgraduate students of naval architecture, maritime engineering and ship science, and the broader engineering community involved in the development of marine craft that rely on the generation of 'lift' such as control engineers and aerodynamicists. - Describes techniques for analyzing the performance characteristics of rudders, hydrofoils, and control surfaces - Includes extensive design data and worked examples for the analysis of rudder, hydrofoil and control surface performance - Provides a detailed examination of the design of hydrofoils
