Excerpt from The Virginia Medical and Surgical Journal, 1855, Vol. 4 The design of the writer of the following pages is to furnish to the young practitioner some assistance in regard to the diagnosis and treat ment of the most important diseases that appear in the field of his oh servation, to place upon record a simple history of their peculiar phases, as presented during the past decade, and a concise description of the method of cure practised, and its results. It perhaps, at the first glance, may seem to be a species of sectional egotism to claim a special attention for the maladies of an isolated re gion, in the pages of a journal of extended circulation; but the writer has satisfactory reasons for believing that the diseases prevalent in his section find their counterparts in nearly every district of the southern states, and that the system of treatment will be found equally applica ble. In any event, however, there can be but little danger of error, for if the physiognomy of disease herein delineated finds not its antitype within the province of the reader, he will reasonably be deterred from the adoption of the practice proposed. Excerpt from The North American Medical and Surgical Journal, 1827, Vol. 3 Tun Editors of this Journal feel themselves called upon to express their gratitude, for the very liberal and favourable feeling which has been expressed towards them, by several contemporaneous periodicals. Their thanks are particularly due, in this country, to the Philadelphia Journal of the Me dical and Physical Sciences; in Canada, to the Quebec Me dical Journal; and in France, to the Revue Encyclopedique. The liberality' of the conductors of these works has led them to expressions of commendation, which, while we feel them to be far beyond our desserts, are warmly treasured by us, as incitements to future exertion. Others have paid us the higher compliment of copying a more or less considerable por tion of our reviews or of the Quarterly Summary especially when the articles extracted contained American information. We are highly gratified to find the Journal thus serving to diffuse a knowledge of the useful contributions made to its pages, through a wider sphere than its original circulation. Excerpt from The United States Medical and Surgical Journal, 1834-1836: Vols. 1-3 Next, as pre-eminent qualities, humanity and sympathy, with firmness and composure, win the confidence and affection of patients, and minister to their relief. Pity without weakness, and the blending of the friend and physician, forms a character above all price. Whatever falsehood and malignity may ia sinuate, these qualities, so far from being inconsistent with intellectual vigor, are its usual attendants. On the other hand, rough blustering manners mostly accompany a weak understanding and dastardly soul, and are indeed frequently affected to conceal those infirmities.
