LIFTING THE VEIL OF YESTERYEAR The young apprentice mage, Pierette, discovers that the pages in the history books are fading away. Like stars going behind a passing cloud, the events that define the sunny world she loves are winking out one by one, and the shadows of ancient headless Gauls¾souls of the dead whose heads once adorned the pillars of the city of Provence¾are seen by night . . . Is the Black Time coming, when evil will reign supreme The answer lies in the long ago, when Provence was a Roman camp, and Pierette must brave the otherworld to journey there. A breathtaking exploration of one of Twombly's largest paintings, the second version of his Treatise on the Veil One of the most important American postwar artists, Cy Twombly (1928-2011) engaged with mythological and poetic source material, setting him apart from other artists of his generation. In 1970, Twombly revisited his 1968 painting Treatise on the Veil and, in a short period of focused creativity, produced a painting--Treatise on the Veil (Second Version)--on a single, 33-foot canvas along with more than a dozen related drawings. This handsomely produced oversize book features three essays that examine these works in relation to Twombly's oeuvre, contemporaneous explorations of time, the Orpheus myth, and a musical composition that Twombly cited as an influence. Large images and details bring us in close to Twombly's magnificent meditation on time and space. Distributed for The Menil Collection

In 2004, the French government instituted a ban on the wearing of "conspicuous signs" of religious affiliation in public schools. Though the ban applies to everyone, it is aimed at Muslim girls wearing headscarves. Proponents of the law insist it upholds France's values of secular liberalism and regard the headscarf as symbolic of Islam's resistance to modernity. The Politics of the Veil is an explosive refutation of this view, one that bears important implications for us all. Joan Wallach Scott, the renowned pioneer of gender studies, argues that the law is symptomatic of France's failure to integrate its former colonial subjects as full citizens. She examines the long history of racism behind the law as well as the ideological barriers thrown up against Muslim assimilation. She emphasizes the conflicting approaches to sexuality that lie at the heart of the debate--how French supporters of the ban view sexual openness as the standard for normalcy, emancipation, and individuality, and the sexual modesty implicit in the headscarf as proof that Muslims can never become fully French. Scott maintains that the law, far from reconciling religious and ethnic differences, only exacerbates them. She shows how the insistence on homogeneity is no longer feasible for France--or the West in general--and how it creates the very "clash of civilizations" said to be at the root of these tensions. The Politics of the Veil calls for a new vision of community where common ground is found amid our differences, and where the embracing of diversity--not its suppression--is recognized as the best path to social harmony.

Spiritualism reached high interest during the mid-19th century, and continued for a number of decades, not only in America, but world-wide. Poets, philosophers, artists, politicians of the time, along with ordinary men and women, in surprising numbers, came to accept spirit communication as a comforting and fulfilling life experience. The early days of Spiritualism brought profound understanding of human destiny after death, and of the relationship between heaven and earth. Many historical figures considered themselves Spiritualist, including one of our greatest Presidents, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln communicated with spirit on the Other Side through mediums and referred to spirit as "our friends from the upper country." It has often been said his writings and speeches were inspired by spirit, especially his Emancipation Proclamation. The veil between worlds continues to become thinner as communication with spirit increases. When spiritual understanding comes, life may take on new purpose. For many, the insight that love and consciousness survives the shedding of the physical body gives comfort and peace. What can be more beautiful and precious than that?

For as long as he can remember, Blake K. Healy has seen angels and demons. He sees them as clearly as he would see you if you were standing right in front of him. He sees angels dancing in worship services and whispering words of encouragement in people’s ears. He also sees demons latching on to people and perpetuating addiction and bitterness in their hearts. The Veil chronicles how Blake matured in this gifting, while overcoming the fear and confusion of what he saw, how he learned to use his gift of seeing for God’s glory, and how to teach others to do the same. This new and updated version of The Veil also includes a brief guide on how to begin growing in the gift of seeing in the spirit yourself, as well as an appendix of scriptural references to the spirit realm and angels, along with Blake’s commentary on these passages.
