Jerry Thigpen's study on the history of the Combat Talon is the first effort to tell the story of this wonderfully capable machine. This weapons system has performed virtually every imaginable tactical event in the spectrum of conflict and by any measure is the most versatile C-130 derivative ever produced. First modified and sent to Southeast Asia (SEA) in 1966 to replace theater unconventional warfare (UW) assets that were limited in both lift capability and speed the Talon I quickly adapted to theater UW tasking including infiltration and resupply and psychological warfare operations into North Vietnam. After spending four years in SEA and maturing into a highly respected UW weapons system the Joint Chief of Staff (JCS) chose the Combat Talon to lead the night low-level raid on the North Vietnamese prison camp at Son Tay. Despite the outcome of the operation the Talon I cemented its reputation as the weapons system of choice for long-range clandestine operations. In the period following the Vietnam War United States Air Force (USAF) special operations gradually lost its political and financial support which was graphically demonstrated in the failed Desert One mission into Iran. Thanks to congressional supporters like Earl Hutto of Florida and Dan Daniel of Virginia funds for aircraft upgrades and military construction projects materialized to meet the ever-increasing threat to our nation. Under the leadership of such committed hard-driven officers as Brenci Uttaro Ferkes Meller and Thigpen the crew force became the most disciplined in our Air Force. It was capable of penetrating hostile airspace at night in a low-level mountainous environment covertly to execute any number of unconventional warfare missions.

The Convair B-36 "Peacemaker" was the last of the classic heavy bombers, bristling with gun turrets and piston engines driving huge propellers. Born in the desperate days of World War II, the B-36 became an icon of the early Cold War when it represented the only weapon that could reach the Soviet Union from bases in North America. But technology was changing rapidly, and the advent of all-jet-powered bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles conspired to make the B-36 obsolete after only a few short years of service. The airplane was retired only a decade after it entered service, and nobody who ever heard the thunder of the six Pratt & Whitney engines will ever forget the experience. An in-depth history of the B-36 may be found in Magnesium Overcast: The Story of the Convair B-36, by Dennis R. Jenkins. This scrapbook began as a collection of illustrations that were assembled for Magnesium Overcast but would not fit into the finished work. Since many of these are significant - or at least interesting - and most have never been published previously, it was decided to print the scrapbook as a companion volume to Magnesium Overcast. However, as work went into the scrapbook, additional images and illustrations were discovered and are also included here. With over 300 b/w and color photos, this scrapbook provides an excellent visual look at a very exciting period of the Cold War.

The F-117 Nighthawk was the world's first operational aircraft designed and built to utilize stealth technology. It was developed specifically to attack high-value targets and escape without being detected by hostile radar systems. The F-117 first saw action during Operation Just Cause in Panama in December 1989, it owned the skies over Iraq during Desert Storm in early 1991, and it supplemented NATO's Operation Allied Force in Yugoslavia and Kosovo. This photography-driven history follows the design, construction, and flight-testing of BLUE-01 and BLUE-02, Lockheed's original demonstrator aircraft. The focus then shifts to the Scorpion Flight Test Team and the development of the F-117 from its first flight through its Initial Operational Capability approval. Only recently has the veil of secrecy surrounding the F-117 and its history been lifted, allowing the general public to learn about this groundbreaking aircraft and its amazing development team. F-117 Stealth Fighter Photo Scrapbook contains never-before-seen photography covering the design, construction, and development of the F-117 and its service history in Operation Desert Storm.

Through rare photographs and previously unpublished government documents, this scrapbook recreates a story that shook the aviation world and forever changed a nation. In the chill of the Cold War, the RCAF and aircraft giant A. V. Roe developed and built a new generation of jet fighter, one that could intercept Soviet bombers flying over the North Pole, a fighter that would stand as the first line of defense for North America. This important collection is vital to understanding the plan, the dream, the technological victories, and how it all went wrong. A must for aviation enthusiasts!

Experimental and Prototype U.S. Air Force Jet Fighters examines the development of fighter airframes and engines since the end of World War II. The book covers each design that reached the hardware development stage and received an XF or YF designation from the Air Force. Sometimes the airframe/engine combination worked, as it did in the North American F-86 Sabre. Other times, technology failed, as it did in the Convair XP-92 ducted-rocket interceptor. In addition to the changing aerodynamic technologies, the evolution of offensive weapons for each evolution of fighter is also reviewed. Much of the data used in the book came from previously classified Air Force program documents. Dozens of never-before-seen photos highlight this review of Air Force fighter aircraft.
