The United States Convention on the Rights of the Child (hereafter "CRC"), the most widely ratified human rights treaty, has yet to be ratified by the United States. While officials under the Obama Administration are pushing for ratification, the United States should not ratify the treaty. Our status as a signatory acknowledges the profound threats to children's rights around the world, and signing the treaty expresses agreement to protect children's rights. While the United States has shown its support for the treaty, it is not efficacious to ratify the treaty because the CRC conflicts with principles of federalism that are inherent to our nation's system.
