Excerpt from The Turf, Vol. 1 of 2: A Satirical Novel Titled plunderers, honourable asso ciates, patrician thieves, by whom youth and inexperience are uniformly surrounded. So inviting and so numerous were the schemes prepared for him, that his stock of self - con trol became inadequate to resist their influ ence. He was elected a member of the best clubs - his presence was eagerly coveted in those circles where were to be found the gayest of the gay - beauty courted him - his own sex flattered; and over this path of roses, he was insidiously led into the most delicious scenes of what may be termed the romance of high life. The turf, the gaming table, the smiles of woman, lay all before him; nor could he refrain from drinking deeply. Excerpt from History of the British Turf, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day Perhaps the Centenary of the Derby is not an unfitting time for the issue of a History of the British Turf. For some two hundred years the pursuit of Horse-racing has been attractive to more of our countrymen than any other out-door pastime, yet no popular account of the Sport has hitherto appeared. It is true that in 1840 Mr. Whyte published a history, in two volumes, chiefly filled up with lists of the principal Stakes run for in successive years; while in 1863 an anonymous author, whose name I have been unable to discover, though I have been at considerable trouble in the effort to do so, issued an account of Horse-racing, which gave some valuable topographical details of the places of Sport, but rarely, if ever, mentioned a horse. The present work is a humble attempt to supply the deficiencies of the two former accounts. It is mainly a compilation from the Sporting Magazines and newspapers, and from books relating to the subject - a list of which is appended. Excerpt from History of the British Turf, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Period to the Present Day But it is not only in this sense that the national character is benefited. Our upper and middle classes, shunning the frivolous pursuits of the effeminate nobility of the continent, and following manly exercises in the fresh air of their native plains, hills and woods, invigorating both their minds and bodies; while their offspring, partaking these effects, grow up bold and vigorous, for the defence of their country, both by sea and land, and fitted for all the active and laborious pursuits of life. Excerpt from Racing Reminiscences and Experiences of the Turf, Vol. 1 of 2 One other object I have had in view: to pre serve a record of the facts connected with an action which I felt it my duty to bring against a nobleman who had traduced my character. The verdict was in my favour, as it was inevitable it must be; but the Stewards of the Jockey Club, who sat as Arbitrators, failed to award me damages which would have marked the magnitude of the wrong I suffered, and I have felt bound therefore to vindicate myself by printing as an Appendix a report of the trial. I regret its length if the reader finds it long; but for reasons which I state in the remarks preceding it I could not make it shorter. For some assistance in the, to me, unaccustomed task of writing a book, I am indebted to my friend Mr. Alfred Watson, the Assistant Editor of the Badminton Library.
