Private investigator, Garry Leary and 15-year-old nephew, Ray, are hot on the trail of a missing person, Truman, last seen in the town of Brookdale-on-Sea. Their wealthy, eccentric client is prepared to use any means at hand to find her brother. Meanwhile, a new technology company in Brookdale is poised to make the place the next Silicon Valley, with the genius recluse behind it shocking those few people he meets with his outrageous, unintentionally comical behaviour and outlook on life. He holds a secret and may not be quite what he seems. The Government, Intelligence Services and Military are all in pursuit of the elusive Truman for reasons of National Security. Leary, streetwise and jokey, just wants to make a fast, easy buck, while a troubled Ray is trying to make sense of the feeling of being “different”, but not in a good way! The pair find themselves up against ruthless powers within and beyond the town. Will Truman ever be found? Does he even exist? Or are there supernatural forces at play? Whatever the answers, Ray’s life is about to change forever. A funny, action-packed, whirlwind adventure which explores what it means to be human. In the quest to find Truman, Ray may, finally, find himself.

Here is a thorough treatment of every important aspect of minority affairs during the Truman administration. The authors trace the significant developments in the quest for minority rights from 1945 to 1953, show the interrelatedness to the struggle waged by America’s racial minorities, and assess the role of the Truman administration in that struggle. The quest of minority peoples for civil rights was a scattered, meager movement until the beginning of the Second World War. Minority group members were segregated, intimidated, poverty-ridden, and undernourished, and their struggle suffered from these weaknesses. This situation changed to an unprecedented extent during the years between 1945 and 1953. Under President Harry S. Truman, the executive branch of the federal government listened to minority groups as never before and often responded to their entreaties and pressures. Civil-rights victories were won in the courts. Educational levels rose and employment opportunities increased. Legal segregation began to crumble, and the campaign for better housing inched forward. Alliances were forged among racial minorities, Jews, organized labor, and political and religious liberals. Sizable elements among the minority group ranks developed a modicum of economic power and political influence for the first time during the Truman administration. This rudimentary power was among the bases for civil-rights and racial developments after 1953. Although the civil-rights story of the Truman administration is one relating mainly to blacks, this study deals with other minority groups, including Indians, Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans, Japanese- and Chinese-Americans, and Jews. Based on extensive research in primary source materials, it is a balanced, in-depth analysis of the power of minorities in eliciting change. It is a valuable addition to the study of social as well as political history.

'THOSE WHO TELL STORIES RULE SOCIETY.'' PLATO.... So who today are our principal storytellers? Not philosophers, but filmmakers. For those who know both the enormous entertainment potential and the culture-shaping power of film, this book will stir mind and imagination. For great stories freight world-sized ideas, ideas worthy of contemplation and conversation. Great cinema inspires wonder. But another philosopher, Aristotle, reminds us that wonder is the true source of philosophy. So perhaps Plato or Aristotle might have a shot at ruling society, even today - if they took an interest in film. These fourteen essays offer wonderful reflection on classic and contemporary films following several major philosophical themes, all within the context of Christian faith: the human condition, the human mind and the nature of knowing, the moral life, and faith and religion. Citizen Kane, Big Fish, Pretty Woman, Legends of the Fall and The Bridges of Madison County contribute to an in-depth consideration of the human condition. The Truman Show, The Matrix, Being John Malkovich and It's a Wonderful Life, among others, illuminate reflection on the human mind and the nature of knowing. Looking at the moral life, contributors interact with such notable films as Pleasantville, Bowling for Columbine, Mystic River and The Silence of the Lambs. The final section pursues the theme of faith and religion traced through a number of Hong Kong martial arts films, Contact, 2001: A Space Odyssey and U2's music documentary, Rattle and Hum. A veritable film festival for all those who want to nurture the wonder of philosophical inquiry and the love of Christian theology through an engagement with big ideas on the big screen.

The U.S. occupation of Japan transformed a brutal war charged with overt racism into an amicable peace in which the issue of race seemed to have disappeared. During the Occupation, the problem of racial relations between Americans and Japanese was suppressed and the mutual racism transformed into something of a taboo so that the two former enemies could collaborate in creating democracy in postwar Japan. In the 1980s, however, when Japan increased its investment in the American market, the world witnessed a revival of the rhetoric of U.S.-Japanese racial confrontation. Koshiro argues that this perceived economic aggression awoke the dormant racism that lay beneath the deceptively smooth cooperation between the two cultures. This pathbreaking study is the first to explore the issue of racism in U.S.-Japanese relations. With access to unexplored sources in both Japanese and English, Koshiro is able to create a truly international and cross-cultural study of history and international relations.

With the end of the Cold War, Europe stands at the crossroads. Today's quest is for a new security order which will provide lasting stability. After the First World War, and again after the Second World War the Western European states faced a similar problem. Many of our present problems have historical roots. The book examines the security policies developed after each of the two world wars. It asks what ideas shaped them and what difficulties they faced. Continuities and discontinuities are traced. Particular attention is paid to the question of how Western Europe achieved a new stability in the 1950s. This volumes brings together the work of twenty historians from eight countries. It deals with foreign policy, political and economic challenges, the impact of new military technologies and strategies, and the aims of the peace movement and the trade unions.
