"This edition of Antony and Cleopatra gives contemporary readers access to Shakespeare’s meaning as no other edition does. While other editors may provide basic information about the historical setting of the play, Jan Blits makes palpable the shape and feel of the world in which the action unfolds. His annotations citing classical authors reveal a world of possibility that would have been available to earlier generations, that Shakespeare would have taken for granted, and that is lost on readers today. His excellent Introduction frames the drama in terms of questions regarding the relative place of the public and private in the polity’s life, the claims of the universal and the national on the allegiance of citizens, and the meaning of nobility that will be highly provocative for anyone interested in Shakespeare as a political thinker." —Joseph Alulis, North Park University

Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra: Edited, With Notes Similar study in the case of Antony. In the nature of An tony, as-in the nature of Macbeth, there is a moral fault or flaw, which circumstances discover, and which in the end works his destruction. In each play the pathos is of the same kind - it lies in the gradual severing Of a man, through the 'lust of power or through the lust of pleasure, from his better self. By the Side of Antony, as by Macbeth's side, there stood a terrible force, in the form of a woman, whose function it was to realize and ripen the unorganized and nu developed evil of his soul. Antony's Sin was an inordinate passion for enjoyment at the expense of Roman virtue and manly energy; a prodigality of heart, a superb egoism of pleasure. After a brief interval, Shakspere went on to ap ply his imagination to the investigating of another form of egoism - not the egoism of self-diffusion, but of self-concem tration. AS Antony betrays himself and his cause through his sin of indulgence and laxity, SO Coriolanus does violence to his own soul and to his country through his sin of haughti ness, rigidity, and inordinate pride. Thus an ethical tend ency connects these two plays, which are also connected in point Of time; while and Cleopafm, although bistori cally a continuation of gum Cwsar, stands separated from it, both in the chronological order Of Shakspere's plays and in the logical order assigned by successive developments of the conscience, the intellect, and the imagination Of the dramatist. Excerpt from Shakspeare's Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra: With Alteration, and With Additions From Dryden But Johnson cannot be fairly convicted of incongruity in the above remarks: for, it is to be recollected, that they claim a bearing upon his general tenets; and that, in his admirable Preface to Shakspeare's Plays, he has defended the Post's de parture from the Unities. The authority of his opinion pro. Duces a powerful Ally to generous Taste, when inclined to rebel against scholastick Prescription; still, although deliberately given, it makes him, he says, frighted at his own temerity. Antony and Cleopatra is a tragedy by William Shakespeare. It was first printed in the First Folio of 1623.The plot is based on Thomas North's translation of Plutarch's Life of Markus Antonius and follows the relationship between Cleopatra and Mark Antony from the time of the Parthian War to Cleopatra's suicide. The major antagonist is Octavius Caesar, one of Antony's fellow triumvirs and the future first emperor of Rome. The tragedy is a Roman play characterized by swift, panoramic shifts in geographical locations and in registers, alternating between sensual, imaginative Alexandria and the more pragmatic, austere Rome. Many consider the role of Cleopatra in this play one of the most complex female roles in Shakespeare's work. She is frequently vain and histrionic, provoking an audience almost to scorn; at the same time, Shakespeare's efforts invest both her and Antony with tragic grandeur. These contradictory features have led to famously divided critical responses.
