Our time recognizes robustness as an important, all-pervading feature in the world around us. Despite its omnipresence, robustness is not entirely understood, rather dif?cult to de?ne, and, despite its obvious value in many situations, rather dif?cult to achieve. One of the goals of this edited book is to report on the topic of robustness from a variety and diverse range of ?elds and perspectives. We are interested, for instance, in fundamental strategies nature applies to make systems robust—and arguably “intelligent”—and how these strategies may hold as general design principles in modern technology. A particular focus is on computer-based systems and appli- tions. This in mind, the book has four main sections: Part I has a look at robustness in terms of underlying technologies and infrastr- tures upon which many computer-based “intelligent” systems reside and inves- gates robustness on the hardware and software level, but also in larger environments such as the Internet and self-managing systems. The contributions in Part II target robustness in research areas that are inspired by biology, including brain-computer interfaces, biological networks, and biological immune systems, for example. Part III involves the exciting ?eld of arti?cial intelligence. The chapters here discuss the value of robustness as a general design principle for arti?cial intelligence, stressing its potential in areas such as humanoid robotics and image processing.

This book describes the key concepts, principles and implementation options for creating high-assurance cloud computing solutions. The guide starts with a broad technical overview and basic introduction to cloud computing, looking at the overall architecture of the cloud, client systems, the modern Internet and cloud computing data centers. It then delves into the core challenges of showing how reliability and fault-tolerance can be abstracted, how the resulting questions can be solved, and how the solutions can be leveraged to create a wide range of practical cloud applications. The author’s style is practical, and the guide should be readily understandable without any special background. Concrete examples are often drawn from real-world settings to illustrate key insights. Appendices show how the most important reliability models can be formalized, describe the API of the Isis2 platform, and offer more than 80 problems at varying levels of difficulty.

We welcome you to the proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Self-Organizing Systems (IWSOS 2009) hosted at ETH, Zurich, Switzerland. IWSOS provides an annual forum to present and discuss recent research in self-organization focused on networks and networked systems. Research in se- organizingnetworkedsystemshasadvancedinrecentyears, buttheinvestigation of its potentials and limits still leaves challenging and appealing open research issues for this and subsequent IWSOS workshops. Complexandheterogeneousnetworksmakeself-organizationhighlydesirable. Bene?ts envisioned by self-organization are the inherent robustness and ada- ability to new dynamic tra?c, topology changes, and scaling of networks. In - dition to an increasingly complex Future Internet, a number of domain-speci?c subnetworks bene?t from advances in self-organization, including wireless mesh networks, wireless sensor networks, and mobile ad-hoc networks, e.g., vehi- lar ad-hoc networks. Self-organization in networked systems is often inspired by other domains, such as nature (evolution theory, swarm intelligence), sociology (human cooperation), and economics (game theory). Aspects of controllability, engineering,testing,andmonitoringofself-organizingnetworksremainchalle- ing and are of particular interest to IWSOS. This year, we received 34 full paper and 27 short paper submissions. The highquality ofthe submissionsallowedus toprovideastrongtechnicalprogram.

DaVaun Sanders has resided in Phoenix, Arizona since 2002, where the local spoken word community fostered his passion to pursue writing novels and screenplays. “The Seedbearing Prince” began as a dream vivid enough to play like a movie trailer. Deciding to write the debut novel took some time, as it wasn't part of "The Plan," but the housing market collapse forced DaVaun's small design firm under in 2008. He eventually decided to step away from architecture and plunge into writing full-time, and is loving every minute as an indy publisher. The Seedbearing Prince: Part I has reached as high as #1 on Amazon’s genre lists for Science Fiction and Epic Fantasy and is a perennial favorite in the top 100 downloads. DaVaun’s screenplay “Vault of Souls,” won the Grand Prize in Phoenix Comicon’s 2014 Short Script Competition. DaVaun is currently hard at work editing Dayn Ro’Halan’s latest adventure, “The Course of Blades,” the third of six books in the World Breach series.
