We must help the student in the learning Of a group Of facts and principles, help him acquire an extensive vocabulary Of mathematical ideas. B. To help the student understand thoroughly all funda mental principles. The mere knowledge alone Of principles is Obviously Of no value whatsoever unless accompanied by a thorough understanding. C. To develop the student's ability to use mathematics as a tool - to apply it. The student Should not merely be a mechanical manipulator or imitator. He should develop his ability to apply the principles Of mathematics to new Situations. It is well to note here that a student may have a thorough knowledge and understanding Of principles, and yet be entirely incapable Of using them in the applications. Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 3: February 20, 1918 In the summer of 1916, during the first four days of the University Summer School, there was held at the University of Texas a Mathematics Tea'chers' Conference. It was rather well advertised in this bulletin and in the literature sent out by the University concerning the session. About thirty teachers came for the conference. They were earnest and enthusiastic and there was a. Feeling that some good had been done. As the writer recalls the matter at this time, each teacher who attended undertook to come again the following year and bring with him two others. Having this encouragement, a second conference for teachers of mathematics Was planned for the same time in 1917. There had been some correspondence on the subject with teachers who had been at the first one, and it was the hope of those who had launched the movement that the next meeting would be both more numerously attended and more profitable to those attend ing than had been the first one. One of the hopes, at least, was not realized. The attendance instead of being larger than in 1916 was somewhat smaller as to the comparative profitableness of the two occasions, the writer has no sure basis for a very positive opinion. We find ourselves, therefore, in somewhat of a quandary as to whether to attempt a conference this summer. The days for. The meeting would be June 12 to 15. Those of us who are at the University, especially -those of us who started this move ment, are loth to see the meetings discontinued, but have no mind to carry them on unless they can reach a reasonable num ber of teachers of mathematics in Texas Schools. Excerpt from Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 11: No. 1 We wish to present in this issue of the bulletin different viewpoints of the missing link now found between high school and college, and if possible locate the difficulty. But it will be noticed that this issue of the bulletin is written largely from the Viewpoint of the college teacher and may not present the whole of the difficulty. The teachers on the other side of the gap should be allowed to have a word in the discussion, and hence we beg our good friends of the high schools to give us in a later issue of the bulletin their viewpoint, making whatever suggestions they may think proper for the good of mathematics in both high school and college.
