Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 3: February 20, 1918 In the summer of 1916, during the first four days of the University Summer School, there was held at the University of Texas a Mathematics Tea'chers' Conference. It was rather well advertised in this bulletin and in the literature sent out by the University concerning the session. About thirty teachers came for the conference. They were earnest and enthusiastic and there was a. Feeling that some good had been done. As the writer recalls the matter at this time, each teacher who attended undertook to come again the following year and bring with him two others. Having this encouragement, a second conference for teachers of mathematics Was planned for the same time in 1917. There had been some correspondence on the subject with teachers who had been at the first one, and it was the hope of those who had launched the movement that the next meeting would be both more numerously attended and more profitable to those attend ing than had been the first one. One of the hopes, at least, was not realized. The attendance instead of being larger than in 1916 was somewhat smaller as to the comparative profitableness of the two occasions, the writer has no sure basis for a very positive opinion. We find ourselves, therefore, in somewhat of a quandary as to whether to attempt a conference this summer. The days for. The meeting would be June 12 to 15. Those of us who are at the University, especially -those of us who started this move ment, are loth to see the meetings discontinued, but have no mind to carry them on unless they can reach a reasonable num ber of teachers of mathematics in Texas Schools. Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 14: February 8, 1930 The table of contents includes twenty-four chapters. The first of these deals with the simple subject of the value of ciphers and the methods of counting. The four chapters that follow take up the four fundamentals of addition, sub traction, multiplication, and division. These are followed by a chapter on checks to verify the processes discussed. Up to this point there is nothing extraordinary. Then fol low two chapters headed as follows, How to add diverse things, How to subtract diverse things, in which the author gives examples involving different money values, and points out methods for reducing the various coins in use to a common value. He then takes seven chapters from IX to XV to discuss fractions, discussing addition, subtrac tion, multiplication, and division separately, and giving lastly a chapter on checks or proofs to test the operations discussed. In chapter XVI he discusses progressions under the title of De las progresiones de los numeros. He declares there are three kinds of progressions: arithmetical, geometrical, and musical, but that he will present only the first two of these. Of particular interest is his quaint yet thorough explana tion of proportions and simple equations which he calls Regla de Tres (rule of Three). In five chapters, from XVII to XXI, he explains in detail the various types of simple equations and their practical application to problems in trade and partnership. He has two chapters that deal in particular with the proportional profits in partnership. This section is very interesting. Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 9 It may be asked why worry about mental arithmetic in the day of labor saving machinery such as computing ma chines, tables and slide rules. Why stimulate the develop ment or rebirth of mental arithmetic by incorporating in the contests of the Interscholastic League a mental arith metic test similar to the spelling and music memory con tests. The first would be much less a test of memory than the latter two. Mr. Russell of the Central High School of Fort Worth is the author of this suggestion. There are many benefits to be urged for a thorough grounding in numbers. It has become very fashionable of late to speak in large numbers (a modest sum of money expressed in Polish or German marks), but very few stu dents have any adequate notions of magnitude. The rela tive magnitudes in centimeters of the diameters of an electron and the universe, the wave length of sodium and that of a very long wireless wave represent adventures into the realms of the very small and the very large. How big is 2 raised to the thirty second power? How big is 2 raised to the minus tenth power? Not only is the judgment as to the ratio of large and small lacking in students but it is necessary to point out as early as possible that. Large and small are relative terms and involve implicitly a ratio. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 7: February 8, 1922 Everyone but the geologist stresses the importance of the graph as a mathematical instrument to be used to represent the dependence of one quantity on another, or to picture statistical data. As a means of solving problems the graph as a tool is found very useful. Ratio, proportion, and varia tion, closely allied to the formula both in interpretation and as a method of solution, are listed as of considerable value by some, by others as essential. Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 12: November 8, 1927 The leaving certificate or matriculation, results from an examination set by some one of several boards, the particular board being selected by the authorities Of the school. Thus there is the Oxford local examination, which corresponds to the responsions given at Oxford; the Cambridge local examination, which corresponds to the previous examina tion Or little go, given at Cambridge - the local imply ing that the examination takes place at the school instead Of at the university. These boards are sometimes com posed by grouping combinations Of several of the dozen or more English universities. The first thing that impressed me upon visiting an Eng lish school was the Obvious intent to give the ambitious and capable pupil the opportunity to advance as fast as he would - he is not held down to the Speed of the majority Of the class, as is the case here. Classes are divided into sections, or sets, or blocks, according to ability. A certain minimum of attainment is required for the leaving certificate, but the better boys do more than this and progress as rapidly as they will.
