Excerpt from The Temper of the American People This concept of modern civilization as basely material also gains ground in the minds of the cultured few, who, because of the loneliness of luxury, or the diffidence of an over-delicate sensitiveness, stand too far away from human reality to know what it truly means. In England the aristocrat lives in Mayfair, or in a demesne in the country where he can shut out the peeping and pathetic crowd, and where he can be free of the bourgeoisie. To be free of the struggling and partly educated middle class is more the note of English aristocracy than to be free of the peasantry; for the latter are needed as scene shifters and supporters of the social fabric, while the former are only possible invaders of the holy precincts. The American of the same type goes abroad. He lives in Rome, Paris, Madrid, walking the galleries when they are least troubled with tourists, and stepping into an older society when it is needy or inadvertent. In both cases the real meanings Of men are misunderstood, and the social phenomena are as poorly classified as biological particulars would be if these Sybarites should dabble in science. Excerpt from Americans of to-Day and to-Morrow A Fine young fellow in a Western college, with that secret desire to do large things with his life hidden away in his breast, as it is in the hearts of most young Americans, said one day, after finishing a thesis on the great days of a former time in history: "Why could not I have lived in that day? Men did great things and did them well then. What sheer joy to be one of the people who dominate human events!" He had been studying and writing of one of the ruling nations of history. Another young fellow standing by replied: "That day is dawning for America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from To the American People The Presidential election is now approaching in the great North American Republic, the nation whose principal emblem is the government of the people by the people itself, the government deriving its just powers from the consent of the governed. Those fundamental principles which are incarnate in the Declaration of Independence have undoubtedly been the regulator of their rapid progress and general prosperity, which have caused the veneration and astonishment of the whole world. But - sad as it is to say so - to-day they seem to forget those sacred principles in the Philippine Islands where between those who were friends and allies, war is now going on, causing material as well as moral damage everywhere. Indeed this unfortunate land is not yet pacified and is very far from being so. And why? Because so far the people have not been satisfied with regard to their legitimate aspirations based upon their independence, aspirations which have been wrongly described by those who have a personal interest to represent them under another aspect to the honorable American people, and who are making every effort to succeed in their designs. I would be one Of the lafl to charge any Man with a Want of Honefiy and Sincerity: but there are ma ny Things in his Book that look like a wilful Perverfion and Mifreprefentation of Faéts, as well as Arguments and fometimes fo circum fianced, that it is fcarce pofiible for the molt extenfive Charity to fuppofe that it'was owing to mere Ignorance. Perhaps the Author him felf would not be willing to accept of this A pology. I cannot help looking upon it as an Honour to Chrifiianity, that its Adveifaries find themfelves obliged to take fuch Methods as thefe, in order to carry on their Defigns a gainft it. Does not this argue a fecret Con fcioufnefs that they can never prevail by a fair Attack upon the Scriptures For furely he muf't be either very wicked or very foolilh, that would have recourfe to fuch bafe Arts as thefe to ferve his Caufe, if he thought his End could be anfwered without it, and that fair and juft Reafoning, and an equal candid Ma nagement would do as well.
