Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools To-day the attention of everyone is fixed on the history that is being made from hour to hour. Our grasp of the ideals which we have formed in the past is being put to the test, and the course of the future is being determined. Patriotism is not a matter of discussion, but of action. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of history from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and forward into the future with less emotion and more coldblooded judgment. What emboldens us to publish it now is that, reading our manuscript again in these days when interpretations of history are being tested in the fire, we see nothing to withdraw and little to alter. The nation has entered this war in no jingo spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Teaching of History in Elementary and Secondary Schools In beginning his illuminating treatment of the Holy Roman Empire, Lord Bryce wrote: "In history there is nothing isolated, and just as to explain a modern act of Parliament, or a modem conveyance of lands, we must go back to the feudal customs of the thirteenth century, so among the institutions of the Middle Ages there is scarcely one which can be understood until it is traced up either to classical or to primitive Teutonic antiquity." This is the first principle for the teacher of history to enforce, as it is the first lesson for the student of history to learn. History offers a third dimension to the superficial area of knowledge that each individual acquires through his own experience. When one boasts that he is not bound by any trammels of the past, he proclaims his own folly, and would, if he could, reduce himself to the intellectual level of the lower animals. Excerpt from History in the Elementary School Of course it is absolutely necessary that the scientific historian shall discover by a rigid method what our social past has really been. The disentanglement of truths from myths is a serious task and must be accomplished relent lessly. But the acceptance of this obligation does not by any means complete the duty of histo rians as a class. Since ordinary men cannot and will not know all that historians do, it is neces sary to choose that which is the more significant in the interpretation of the historic currents which have swept us into our present and will sweep us on to our future. Excerpt from The Story of American History for Elementary Schools Some sort of a first book on American history is now quite generally used in schools as a preparation for the more intelligent study of a larger and more formal text-book in the higher grammar grades. For beginners, a mere compilation of facts is dry and unsatisfactory. Such books have now given place, for the most part, to those prepared on a more attractive and judicious plan. The real aim in a first book should be to interest boys and girls in the history of their country, and to encourage them to cultivate a taste for further study and reading. This book is intended for use in the earlier grammar grades and to be preliminary to the study of a more advanced work in the higher grades. The author has also kept in mind the fact that the school life of many children is brief, and that all their instruction in Amer ican history must come from a text-book of this kind. Excerpt from History in the Elementary Schools Methods, Courses of Study, Bibliographies The course of study outlined in the following pages is first of all practicable. It has been subjected to the test of teachers and supervisors in elementary schools of the country and the city, and of Normal Training Schools. It is the result of years of experience in public schools con ducted under ordinary conditions. It is easily adaptable to either graded or ungraded schools. While it provides for a complete course of study in history from the first to the eighth grades inclusive, it is so arranged that it may be used in connection with any rational plan of correlation of history with other subjects, especially with industrial training, literature and geog raphy. This is particularly true of the outlines for the first four grades. In ungraded schools and those only partially graded, doubtless the demands of the daily pro gram render the adoption of some scheme of combining and coordinating allied subjects an actual necessity. This course provides the desired core or basis for the corre lation of history, geography and literature and, in the primary grades, manual training, in a perfectly natural and interesting manner. Many able educators have been consulted in the prepara tion of this course, and it is believed to be so complete in ever detail that boards of education can adopt it as the course in his tory and civics without further reference to these subjects in th school manual or regular course of study. This course has bee prepared with especial reference to the regular text-books. Teach ers and pupils frequently complain that the regular or officia text on history is too difficult, and it is hoped that this course wil be of great assistance to them in the use of this text. Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography, in Elementary Schools We must bear in mind that we are teaching children geography, among other things, and also that we are teaching geography to children. Hence our plan must be organized from two contrasted points of View, always bearing in mind that while the work must be worth while at every stage, it must also be valuable as a whole in preparing pupils for the adult life they will meet out of school. Excerpt from The Teaching of History A practical teacher cannot avoid developing a certain bias in favour of some ideas and against others, but it has been attempted in this volume to present the case for each school of method with as much fairness as possible. No attempt has been made to produce a stereotyped syllabus or universal code of rules of method, as it is far too early to decide what will be the ultimate product of the very conspicuous reform movement which is at present in course of development among teachers of history. Excerpt from Course of Study in History, Civics, and Ethics for the Day Elementary Schools Fundamentally, history, -civics, and Geography deal with relationships or problems arising from man's efforts to live with his fellows on the earth. They are different aspects of the same social subject, rather than three closely correlated subjects as they have often been viewed. This conception of History, Civics, and Geography as a tri-une subject has exercised a controlling influence over the selection of the kind and extent of teaching material, and the recommendations of types of teaching method, made in this Course of Study. It should, therefore, be thoroughly understood and appreciated by the teacher who would achieve the aim intended in this Course.
