Excerpt from The Substance of Socialism The first part of this little volume consists of an address which, somewhat abridged and modified, was delivered at a Socialist Conference in Boston. The second part consists of a paper contributed, in June, 1909, to the North American Review, and reprinted here, slightly revised, through the courtesy of the editor and publishers of that periodical. The third and last consists of a stenographic report of a lecture delivered in Cooper Union, New York City, under the auspices of the Peoples Institute, revised for this publication. Probably no article upon the subject has ever been more widely discussed than the paper from the North American Review. Excerpt from The Essentials of Socialism The socialist movement, young though it is, has spread very rapidly, until at the present time there is scarcely any part of the globe free from its enthusiastic, self-sacrificing, and proselyting members. Excerpt from A Study in Socialism I know if you do not ask me, said St. Augustine, when asked: What is Time? Most of us feel that we know what Socialism is until we begin to define it. It may be called a modern social phenomenon. It springs from modern industrial conditions as they are combined with the more modern phases of sentiment and thought. A more particular definition would only invite criticism and dispute. Socialists themselves are not agreed on a definition. One says it is a religious movement,1 another a moral movement,2 another, a humanitarian movement.3 In the Communist Manifesto it is termed a proletarian movement, in the Chicago platform, a purely economic movement, in the Gotha and Erfurt Programs and other official utterances in Europe and America, a revolutionary movement, a political movement, a working-class move ment, a movement for the abolition of classes, for better working conditions, for social justice, for the emancipa tion of labor, etc., etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Socialism and War The lectures as printed in this volume are not, however, in quite the same form as when delivered orally. Nor is the substance exactly identical. The exigencies of oral delivery sometimes made it necessary to treat the different points touched upon in the lecture in a different order from that originally intended; and occasionally leave some points untouched upon, when the lecture became too long for delivery in the lecture room. The lectures as here presented are, therefore, not in the form in which they were delivered, but rather in the form in which they were intended to be delivered. The substance remaining the same, except for the omissions in the oral delivery but included in the present volume. Excerpt from A History of Socialism We all know that the propaganda of socialism has been attended with intemperate and violent language with wild opinions which are often inconsistent with the first principles of social order, with revolutionary outbreaks leading to bloodshed, desolation and long-con tinned unrest and suspicion. These things are greatly to be deplored. But we shall be wise if we regard them as symptoms of wide-spread and deep-seated social disease. The best way to cure such disease is to study and remove the causes of it. No physician will have any success in combating a malady if he content him self with suppressing its symptoms. For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the Open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working-classes, of women, and of the down-trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Excerpt from Socialism and Co-Operation Smillie, and Trotsky, and Mr. Sidney Webb. I have called each of these gentlemen a socialist, because each would call himself a socialist. I believe in freedom of thought, and it seems to me absurd to forbid anyone to think and call himself a socialist if he wishes to do so. It is, however, notorious that Lenin and Trotsky would deny that many of the others mentioned were socialists, while some Of the others would deny' that Lenin and Trotsky's system of society had any right to call itself socialism. It is essential that a writer on socialism should face this difficulty and make his position clear at the outset. I am aware that, although I call myself and think myself a socialist, many other socialists will deny that what I call socialism is really socialism. I cannot return the compliment. I believe that most people who honestly consider themselves to be socialists are such. Lenin and Mr. Sidney Webb are both socialists, because they both wish the foundations of social organization to be Of a certain kind. They may differ fundamentally on other, and possibly equally impor tant, questions, on, e.g., the means by which the social revolution may be attained, but they do agree on this vital point they wish to substitute a socialistic for a capitalistic society. Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject stop short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. It is in this spirit that I have endeavoured to set forth the main points in the recent literature of Socialism. The chief books published on the Continent as well as the English literature of the subject have been thoroughly examined, and every effort has been made to secure a just and accurate account of the main issues. The periodical literature of Socialism has also been investigated to the best of my ability. It is so extensive that an absolutely complete knowledge is unattainable, but I hope that few important omissions will be found. In the Supplement I have given chapters on Revolutionary Syndicalism; Recent Developments of American Socialism; and Notes on Australian Socialism. Excerpt from The Passing of Capitalism: And the Mission of Socialism The economic structure of our modern society is clearly drifting towards the socialization of industry, and Social ism is preparing the people for this revolutionary change. The time is near when the tools of. Production and raw material will be turned over to the people engaged in pro duction, when production will be carried on, not for profit, but for consumption, when socialized production will be car ried on by society in the interest of society; in short, when society at large will be the master of its own economic destiny: Such a revolution in economic life demands a radical revision and readjustment of our moral conceptions; it demands a clear vision of the drift of our time and a great deal of en thusiasm in the cause of human welfare. This clearness of vision, this enthusiasm and the gospel of a new system of ethics Socialism brings to the people.
