Leaping from the bank, he approached the light, though with some difficulty, his steps being impeded by the brushwood, and his feet clogged by the swampy nature of the soil. Still he pushed onward, and at last came close to the light, which he found to proceed from four torches tied together, their shafts stuck into the ground.
