In the Brahma Sutras of Badarayana, we find what is perhaps the most influential work in the history of Hindu Theology, given that the Brahma Sutras served as the basis for the theologies of all major Hindu theologians, including Sankara, Ramanuja, Nimbarka,Vallabha, and Madhva. In this work Dr. Adams examines the first of the Brahma Sutras four sections in an attempt to identify their original meaning and the theology that Badarayana attempted to express.

Grand in its sweep, this survey of the sacred writings of the major religions of the world offers a thoughtful introduction to the ideas and beliefs upon which great faiths are built. Under the expert guidance of John Bowker, a religious scholar and author of international stature, readers explore the key texts of Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jain, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, Confucian, Daoist, and Shinto traditions. The author discusses some 400 books, among them such well-known sacred texts as the Bible and the Quran, but also spiritual writings by theologians, philosophers, poets, and others. Bowker provides clear and illuminating commentary on each text, describing the content and core tenets of the work and quoting pertinent passages. He also sets the writings in religious and historical contexts, showing how they have influenced—and in many cases continue to influence—artistic, musical, literary, and political traditions. The Message and the Book is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the meaning and the deep significance of primary religious texts of civilizations around the globe.

According to Advaita-Vedanta, God or Brahman is identical with the inner self (the Atman) of each person, while the rest of the world is nothing but objective illusion (maya). Shankara maintains that there are two primary levels of existence and knowledge: the higher knowledge that is Brahman itself, and the relative, limited knowledge, regarded as the very texture of the universe. Consequently, the task of a human being is to reach the absolute unity and the reality of Brahman--in other words, to reach the innermost self within his or her own being, discarding on the way all temporary characteristics and attributes.

The Srutisarasamuddharanam (Extracting the Essence of the Sruti) is the major work of Totakacarya who is regarded by tradition as one of the four-principle disciples of Adi Sankara. Composed in Sanskrit, the work consists of one hundred and seventy-nine verses. The aim of these verses is to bring out the essential meaning of the Upanisads. Through an analysis of various Upanisad statements, as well by compatible reasoning, Sri Totaka shows that the Upanisads teach that Brahman is real, the world is mithya and that the essential nature of the jiva is none other than Brahman. The teaching is presented in the form of a dialogue between a student and a guru. Totaka skilfully manages to bring out the main Advaita teachings while maintaining the context of a discussion. These verses are not only valuable for what they teach, but in them we also find an accurate account of the tradition of Advaita as it existed at the time of Sankaracarya himself. Accompanying the Devanagari text of the verses is an English translation of each verse followed by a brief commentary in English to assist in understanding the verses.

The crisis of 21st-century religion is upon us. With fewer people remaining committed to traditional religions and most new religious movements in their infancy, where does that leave the vast “silent spiritual majority” who find the old religions to be obsolete and the new religions to be not yet credible? For everyday people who feel lost between a rejected religion of the past and a still obscure religion of the future, Thinking About Religion in the 21st Century suggests that there is indeed another way to look at religion, fully informed by 21st-century sensibilities, that requires no sacrifice of the intellect or abandonment of moral sensibilities. The old religions can be set aside, and the religions of the future might not yet have evolved into something worthy of full commitment, but there already exists a viable, evolving alternative spiritual perspective, grounded in the elements of everyday, ordinary human experience, already available.
