Excerpt from The Spiritual Revival But before we attempt to make cultural work a part of the Zionist programme, we must distinguish between the two branches of that work. These two branches, though they differ in kind, have hitherto been confused, with the result that the question has become still further complicated. Excerpt from The Revival Manual Infidelity assumes a variety of forms but in none is it more successful and more fatal, than when it appears robed in livery stolen from the Sanctuary, and goes forth as the friend and advocate of religion, and assumes to steady and guide the ark of God. In this form, and with these pretensions, many who design to be honest Christians, are deceived by it, and unsuspectingly embrace its errors, for the teachings of Christianity, who, should they meet it undisguised, would shun it as they would the hissing serpent. So far as the influences that emanate from unsanctified hearts is allowed to dictate the language of the pulpit, and direct the exercises of the sanctuary, it will constrain the one to speak such smooth things as will startle none from their own carnal repose, and muld the other into a form which will secure the friendship and support of an unrenewed world. In no one instance has this been more strikingly illustrated than on the subject of conversion and the means to be employed to procure conversions. Excerpt from The Revival in Its Physical, Psychical, and Religious Aspects Tun striking forms taken by the Revival in Ulster have attracted so largely the attention of the public, that one main difficulty to a serious consideration of the subject has been overcome. All classes are satis fied, however various their modes of accounting for the revival movement, that they are in the presence of a great fact. Whether it be true, as so many think, that it is due to the direct working of the Holy Spirit, or as many others think, that it is the direct working of the Devil to lead souls astray, or as the Materialists think, that it is simply a reproduction, in a somewhat new form, of a physical disease, its facts are ac knowledged after the keenest scrutiny, and are testified by thousands of intelligent witnesses. This is a great point gained, for there have been many movements, which did not receive such acknow ledgment through the older days, of spiritual forces, not entirely similar in all their points of interest, but bearing a strong analogy with the now revival, and by the light of which, the true nature of what we are now inquiring into can be better discussed, and more broadly enquired into. Indeed from a review of those older movements, one is inclined to think that probably the newest thing about the present revival is the temper of the time upon which it has fallen, which has given so large an audience of atten tive listeners, and so many intelligent and enquiring Christian men, who, admitting its facts, want to know in what they originate, and how they are to be accounted for. This is the large enquiry, then, which is before us. Are these the days spoken of through the prophet Joel, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions, and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit 1 Or is the whole a snare of the Satan, against which we should raise the warning voice, and hold up the strong arm to repress it? Or shall we invoke the aid of medicine and drugs to restore that healthy condition of the body, the-want of which alone per mits the continuance of the phenomena which are brought so strikingly before us? Excerpt from Revival and the Pastor The early Christian fathers abound in sim ilar representations, and almost rival the holy apostles in fervency of expostulation. At all times prior to the Reformation there were orders and individual ministers regarded as peculiarly qualified to arouse the Church and to awaken sinners. Can God stir revival by his Holy Spirit, even in our culture today? Do we really believe he can? In a day of diminished expectations, A God-Sized Vision: Revival Accounts That Stretch and Stir recounts global examples of prior revivals, beginning with the Reformation and the Great Awakenings. It continues with the Welsh and Azusa Street revivals and those that occurred simultaneously in Asia, followed by the East Africa Revival of the 1930s. More recent revivals in North America that instigated parachurch or evangelistic ministries like those of Billy Graham and the revivals in China, particularly in Henan Province over the last forty years, give further evidence of church renewal. These stories enlarge our hearts, expand our minds, and empower our witness to the power of God at work in human history. Christians with a deep evangelistic commitment who realize that there is more to church growth than field-tested techniques will expand their vision by remembering God’s vision, as it has been revealed throughout history. Hansen and Woodbridge mine these stories of renewal to suggest how to get ready for revival today.

Excerpt from Getting Ready: For a Revival Great as are many of the mistakes made in the management of revival work, there is none, in my judgment, so general and disastrous as the neglect adequately to prepare for the coming special services, weeks, and even months in advance. The time was when preparation for a revival was impossible, for a preacher with from ten to forty appointments to serve could do little more than preach, holding a meeting here or there as the Spirit seemed to indicate. The rapid concentration of mind and heart possible to our simple minded fathers on account of the lack of other subjects of thought and feeling made preparation less necessary than it is now in this day of complex civilization with its unnumbered distracting elements. What was once a simple problem has become a greatly complicated one whose solution requires great fertility in expedients and indomitable patience. I was impressed with this fact at the very beginning of my ministry, and what little success the Lord has given me in winning souls has seemed largely due on its human side to the plans and methods employed in preparing the way for the revival service. It has seemed a duty to give an account of the general principles which guided me in this work with such plans and methods as would illustrate them, and make them more suggestive, as a help to others whose thoughts have not taken the same direction, or whose youth and inexperience would lead them to welcome practical suggestions in this important work. Excerpt from Revivals and Revival Work The subject matter of this little volume was prepared originally as a new chapter for the authors work on Homiletics and Pastoral Theology, and, as here produced, was printed from plates made for that work. Owing to this fact, the form of its present appearance is different from what it otherwise would have been, and the foot notes, some of which refer to the preceding chapters of the larger work, necessarily appear in this volume. Of course, an exhaustive treatment of so important and broad a subject as that which forms our title would be impossible within the limits of so small a volume as this. Trusting, however, that, with all its imperfections, it will be found to contain some inspiring thoughts for devout readers, and some valuable hints and suggestions to those who aspire to be useful in winning souls, this unpretentious contribution to the literature of revivals is now commended to the Christian public by The Author. Excerpt from Revival Sermons My feeling toward my father, and ever Since I can remember, has been such, that I have at times feared the Apostle would have condemned it as an inordinate affection, and yet there is this excuse for me, that every member Of his household, our ser vants even, sinned in the same way, if not to the same degree. Certain it is, that the disease Of which my mother died, was my father's, death, for she never held up her head after that befell and hastened to rejoin him within a very few months. Wherever he was known, and according to his degree Of acquaintanceship, he was beloved. Because with all, as with his own family, it Was distinctly a Christian affection which he inspired, and there fore an affection the deepest and most durable of all. When I prepared his Life and Labors, for the press I endeavored to guard myself, and him, from any excess of love and, perhaps, the large circulation to which that volume has attained, in the Old World and the New, as well as the absence of any criticism in the matter, is proof that the self-control was sufficient. In my Story of Carter Quarterman my father, under the transparent disguise of Dr. Quarterman, is portrayed with a freer hand, yet even there I have regarded Truth as more sacred than the one I loved only a little more, at last, than how many thousand! Excerpt from The Revival Thermometer: Or, Gauging One's Spiritual Worth Jesus Christ gives a perfect salvation, which produces perfect character, while the mere moralist claims a character which demands salvation upon the ground of its worthiness. The minister, with his glad tidings of salvation through Christ, has a message even for an audience of convicts, while the moralist, with his salvation by character, would only mock the distress and despair of men who know that their characters do not even commend them to immrfect men, much less to an infinitely holy God.
