Excerpt from The Social Psychology of Groups Some of the implications of Ross's injunction, to begin with social interaction, may be seen by considering the distinctive aspects of social interaction that are revealed when it is compared with the simpler situation with which individual psychology has traditionally dealt. In the typical experiment in psychology the subject is in some manner under the management of the experimenter, who controls the presenta tion of stimuli, the Opportunities for behavior available to the subject, and, most importantly, the provision of diverse incentives and rewards for behavior. In general, by these various means, the experimenter exerts control over the behavior of the subject, and the procedures by which he does so constitute the independent variables of the experi ment. The behaviors that the subject actually, emits constitute, of course, the dependent variables. In these experiments it is usually assumed that the subject has no counter-control over the experimenter. What the subject does makes no difference to the investigator (at least if he is thoroughly in his scientific role of impartial seeker of truth), and even if it does make a difference it cannot be permitted to cause him to deviate from his pre arranged schedule of activities. This assumption must be valid if the two sets of variables are to have the status of independent and depend ent, in which the former can be viewed as antecedent to the latter in causal efficacy. Classic and Contemporary Perspectives in Social Psychology illuminates the dynamic linkages among social organization, interaction processes, attitudes, and the self. It exposes students to the broad range of topics of interest to social psychologists and to the diverse methods that they use. Bringing together a wide variety of captivating classic and contemporary selections, this anthology includes work from a symbolic interactionist perspective as well as studies informed by expectation states theory, experimental social psychology, and life course sociology. The selections address the social psychological underpinnings and outcomes of group dynamics, social stratification, bureaucracy, deviant behavior, globalization, and technological change. The reader's innovative structure allows students to experience the foundational work of influential sociologists and psychologists through the lens of cutting-edge issues. This groundbreaking collection features brief excerpts from the classic literature of social psychology (by Emory Bogardus, Melvin Kohn, Stanley Milgram, Muzafer Sherif, Philip Zimbardo, and others). These texts are paired with explanatory comments by the editors and contemporary writings that show the earlier studies' relevance to contemporary social issues. Classic and Contemporary Perspectives in Social Psychology is enhanced by several pedagogical features, including introductory comments that highlight the connections between the classic and contemporary selections, highly engaging discussion questions for each article and unit, and a wide variety of supplemental resources (readings, websites, films, and radio programs). It is ideal for both undergraduate and graduate courses in social psychology.

This landmark theory of interpersonal relations and group functioning argues that the starting point for understanding social behavior is the analysis of dyadic interdependence. Such an analysis portrays the ways in which the separate and joint actions of two persons affect the quality of their lives and the survival of their relationship. The authors focus on patterns of interdependence, and on the assumption that these patterns play an important causal role in the processes, roles, and norms of relationships. This powerful theory has many applications in all the social sciences, including the study of social and moral norms; close-pair relationships; conflicts of interest and cognitive disputes; social orientations; the social evolution of economic prosperity and leadership in groups; and personal relationships.

Excerpt from Social Psychology My debt to my students is greater, I am sure, than any of them can ever believe. The limitations of this book would be far greater than they are if several dozens of them had not patiently, kindly, and astutely criticized its preliminary edition, which they suffered as a text. Apart from this very practical help, moreover, the classroom is the crucible in which any textbook is fired, and to those several generations of students on whom I have tried out this theory or that manner of approach I am eternally grateful. Excerpt from The Psychology of the Club: A Study in Social Psychology The Spectator says that there is nothing, as far as he can see, that any human being can desire to do, to think, or to work for, that has not a society all ready for him or her to enter. The path of life is beset with membership from the cradle to the grave The kindergarten has its alumni association, invalids have their shut-in Society, the poor organize, the rich organize, everybody belongs to some sort of a club. At a recent murder in one of our large cities the jury, though it had shown itself unable to agree on a verdict, agreed at once, as soon as discharged, to organize as a per manent society, pay dues, and have an annual dinner. The Spectator expects soon to see an announcement of the forma tion of the Daughters of Ellis Island with Wilhelm der Grosse Chapters or Lusitania Leagues. Electronic Inspection Copy available for instructors here The field of social psychology is defined by a number of 'classic studies' that all students need to understand and engage with. These include ground-breaking experiments by researchers such as Asch, Festinger, Milgram, Sherif, Tajfel and Zimbardo. With the help of international experts who are renowned for work that has extended upon these researchers' insights, this book re-examines these classic studies through careful reflection on their findings and a lively discussion of the subsequent work that they have inspired. Organized in a way that way maps onto the content of most introductory courses, this title can work at a number of levels: as an accessible text for introductory classes that present a historical analysis of social psychology via its key studies, or as a broad-ranging text for higher-level courses that survey contemporary theory and encourage critical thinking. More generally, it is a compelling read for anyone who wants to know more about social psychology and the dramatic studies that lie at its heart.

Excerpt from An Introduction to Social Psychology Since this volume is designed to promote this change of practice, it is fitting that it should Open with a brief inquiry into the causes of the anomalous state of affairs at present Obtaining and with some indication of the way in which it is hoped that the change may be brought about. For there can be no question that the lack Of practical recognition of psychology by the workers in the social sciences has been in the main due to its deficiencies, and that the only way of establishing it in its true place is to make good these deficiencies. What, then, are these deficiencies, and why have they so long persisted? We may attempt very brie y to indicate the answers to these questions without presuming to apportion any blame for the long continuance Of these deficiencies between the professed psychologists and the workers in the social.
