One of the most intriguing works of art which have come down to us from antiquity is the Roman fresco known as 'The Aldobrandini Wedding'. As in the first two volumes of his iconological studies, the author's critical review of previous interpretations reveals that none of them will stand up to scrutiny. By applying a modern art-historical method, he arrives at a fundamentally new interpretation which accounts for the many iconographical details which are a distinctive feature of 'The Aldobrandini Wedding'. The painting turns out to be an idiosyncratic variant of a mythological theme that frequently crops up elsewhere in Roman art.

The years between 1990 and 2016 have witnessed a remarkable upsurge in the interest in the famous Roman fresco known as the Aldobrandini Wedding (Le Nozze Aldobrandini), now in the Vatican Museums. The present author published a monograph on this fresco in 1994, but a spate of new information prompted him to rethink afresh the problems posed by the Aldobrandini Wedding to a contemporary viewer.00The main research questions of the present publication relate to the original shape and form which the fresco must have had in antiquity; when and where it originated; why it cannot possibly be the representation of ancient wedding rituals (as is generally assumed); the meaning of the image depicted on the wall painting; problems relating to the original archaeological context and the formal relationship with other representations which are also considered to be ?Brautbilder?. The overriding purpose of the writer has been to situate the famous wall painting as fully as possible within the body of Roman wall paintings found elsewhere, notably in Pompei and Herculaneum.00The value of this new study on the Aldobrandini Wedding may be found primarily in the choice of different premises and the consistent application of a ?microscopic? iconographical analysis. This monograph offers a more reliable base and a new orientation for further discussions on the famous fresco.

Modern English translations of several of the most important essays of Winckelmann, one of the fathers of art history and archaeology and a strong influence on Goethe and Schiller and Weimar Classicism. Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-68) has long been recognized as one of the founders of modern art history and a major force in the development of archaeology and the study of ancient Greek architecture. He also exerted an influence on the Weimar Classicism of Goethe and Schiller, for whom his description of Greek sculpture as evoking "edle Einfalt und stille Grösse" (noble simplicity and a calm greatness) became a watchword. He contributed to modern scientific archaeology through his application of empirically derived categories of style to the analysis of classical works of art and architecture, and was one of the first to undertake detailed empirical examinations of artifacts and describe them precisely in a way that enabled reasoned conclusions to be drawn about ancient societies and their cultures. Yet several of his important essays are not available in modern English translation. The present volume remedies this situation by collecting four of Winckelmann's most seminal essays on art along with several shorter pieces on the topic, two major if brief essays on architecture, and one longer essay on archaeology. Paired with thisis an introduction covering Winckelmann's life and work. David Carter is retired as Professor of Communicative English at Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, and is former Lecturer in German Studies at the University of Southampton, UK. Among his recently published translations from German are Klaus Mann's novel Alexander (2008) and On Cocaine (2011), a collection of Sigmund Freud's writings on the topic.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) has long been recognized as one of the great innovators in the history of art. Through detailed analysis of paintings from his early Roman period, 1594-1602, this study now situates his art firmly within both its humanistic and its scientific context. Here, both his revolutionary painterly techniques--pronounced naturalism and dramatic chiaroscuro--and his novel subject matter--still-life compositions and genre scenes--are finally put into their proper cultural and contemporary environment. This environment included the contemporary rise of empirical scientific observation, a procedure--like Caravaggio's naturalism--committed to a close study of the phenomenal world. It also included the interests of his erudite, aristocratic patrons, influential Romans whose tastes reflected the Renaissance commitment to humanistic studies, emblematic literature and classical lore. The historical evidence entered into the record here includes both contemporary writings addressing the instructive purposes of art and the ancient literary sources commonly manipulated in Caravaggio's time that sanctioned a socially realistic art. The overall result of this investigation is characterize the work of the painter as an expression of "learned naturalism."
