Excerpt from The Smith College Monthly, Vol. 25: October, 1917 For the future, we feel secure. We shall doubtless have our times Of academic fog, or east wind, or even electrical disturb ance, we may perhaps have dull belts Of the humidity incident to our Valley geography; but we are sure, the year around, Of our share Of God's own golden weather, to be enjoyed and used under a leader whom we admired before we knew him, and whom now we love, and under whom we are going to live and study with all our minds and hearts. Excerpt from The Smith College Monthly, Vol. 13: October, 1905 June, 1906 Emerson has named self-trust as the most priceless attain ment of the student, and the education that leads to it he finds in nature, in books, and in action; but be conceived that the soul grows in stature principally by action, and that a man is made noble only by men. No one can be truly good alone; it is only in a group that we realize ourselves, and our community life here is Of greater service in this sort Of character building than we sometimes realize. This self-trust and self-responsibility are the keynotes struck as soon as a student enters Northampton. Single-handed, she must breast the torrent of drivers and expressmen, and the emissaries Of the S. C. A. C. W. Single-handed, she must plan her work amid the conflicting demands of Official and unofficial advisers. Position and circumstance may prepare the Way be fore her, but after all, it is really her individual use of them that counts. She has to stand or fall alone. The easiest path to the goal, she may not take; she may wande r in circuitous and vexatious ways at first, but the vital thing is that she has under taken the journey and is directing her steps herself. This then, this sense of responsibility, is to my mind the most educative feature Of college life. It is twofold in character it develops both the individual and the social side. It teaches us to stand on our own feet and to make sure at the same time that we are not unduly crowding our neighbors. The difference be tween these is not always appreciated. A responsible self Will reach chapel on time, but it will not do so by cutting across a corner Of the grass. A responsible self will be duly prepared for examinations, but a responsible social self will not do SO by Withdrawing from the library Shelves the only book available for her classmates. It is really a very large thing, this being a responsible social self. It includes the private self, as the Whole includes the parts. It is made of insight and sympathy, that wisest combi nation Of the head and heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Smith College Monthly, Vol. 16: October, 1908-June, 1909 The second of these is to be gained from a habit of self discipline: discipline of character by the persistent effort to make the proper moral response to the demands of any situa tion; and discipline of mind by as persistent an effort to meet the intellectual demands Of every Situation. The first element - responsiveness - comes only through the action of a refined and quickened imagination, strung to Vibrate to the subtlest melody. In so far as we have acquired this habit of self-discipline, and have gained possession of a refined and quickened imagination, we have acquired culture, and have in that measure succeeded and in so far as we have not acquired these, whatever be the ex ternal marks of success upon us, we have in that measure failed. Every one Of us, I fancy, has known the bitter taste of it. Every one Of us could say, Here, and here, I have failed. It is not good to brood. Our college course is closed. Beyond a certain recognition of what it has meant to us, or should have meant to us above what it has, no more is to be done about it. Our next school is the world. We shall be educated henceforth by seeking a need there, and filling it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
