DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis research paper investigates the role of civil society organizations in empowering women, taking Imam Sadr Foundation as a case study. The objectives of the research include assessing the availability of factors contributing to womens empowerment, such as education, health, services, work and regulations at the Foundation. The research also aims at examining the various levels of empowerment for women and their families, as well as for society more generally, and the extent to which the enabling factors contribute to womens empowerment and their capacities in terms of decision-making and social participation. The findings of this study show that womens empowerment is virtually the raison dêtre and the main purpose of Imam Sadr Foundation, as it can be observed at many levels: educational, psychological and social empowerment through the training and care provided for orphaned girls, as well as health and psychological empowerment through care services dedicated for mothers and children, including dialogue sessions and awareness activities. The nursing school graduates distinguished professionals in the field, as well. The Foundation also offers accelerated vocational training programs in various specializations, thus ensuring vocational and technical empowerment. Moreover, The foundation deploys efforts to achieve legal and political empowerment in order to effect deep social change, by reconsidering the roles set for both men and women and questioning their equality, as well as combating all forms of discrimination against women.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKWomen are at the heart of civil society organizations (CSOs) that challenge oppressive practices at a local and global level and develop outstanding entrepreneurial activities. Yet CSO research tends to ignore considerations of gender, and the rich history of activist feminist organizations is rarely examined. This collection corrects that oversight, exploring the nexus between the emancipation of women and their roles in CSOs. Featuring contrasting, international studies from a wide range of contributors, it covers emerging issues such as the role of social media in organizing, the significance of religion in many cultural contexts, activism in Eastern Europe, and the impact of environmental degradation on women's lives. Asking whether involvement in CSOs offers a potential source of emancipation for women or maintains the status quo, this book will have an impact on both equal-opportunity policy and practice.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIs civil society’s influence favorable to the evolvement of democratic structures and democratic gender relations? While traditional approaches would answer in the affirmative, the authors highlight the ambivalences. Focusing on women’s organizations in authoritarian and hybrid regimes, they cover the full spectrum of civil society’s possible performance: from its important role in the overcoming of power relations to its reinforcement as backers of government structures or the distribution of antifeminist ideas.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKTremendous optimism prevails around bottomup accountability — a situation in which citizens effectively hold their government to account. This contrasts with top-down accountability, whereby higher tiers of governments, donors, or nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) fulfill this role by restraining, monitoring, and rewarding or sanctioning government. Bottom-up accountability can involve direct citizen participation (often involving efforts to provide them information, voice, and involvement in policymaking) or can be mediated through civil society organizations (CSOs) that monitor and potentially reward or sanction government. A large variety of different types of CSOs exist, distinguished both by their organizational purpose and the composition of their membership, possibly with different willingness and ability to hold government accountable.
