Excerpt from The Poetry and the Religion of the Psalms I have to thank the Trustees for extending to me the time allowed for the publication of the Lectures. The delay has enabled me to return Once and again, as I was desirous of doing, in something of the attitude of a critic of my own positions. When one's conclusions do not agree with the current Views of those who are regarded as authorities, it becomes him at least not to be rash in the publi cation of them. Excerpt from The Book of Psalms The present General Editor for the Old Testament in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpreta tions adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement withlone another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems-best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. Excerpt from The Story of the Psalms We ought to be grateful that it did not fall down from heaven like the fabulous statue of Diana of the Ephesians; nor was it whispered into any man's ear by a pigeon after the fashion in which Mahomet said that he received the Koran but God caused it to grow upon the earth, and to draw into itself all that was noblest and purest in many generations of our fellow men. We ought to remember that there is not a book in it, and hardly a chapter, the threads of which are not interwoven with the actual experience of a human life. The Psalms in History and Biography is a title authored by Reverend John Ker, the work is an in-depth and interesting examination of the Psalms and their place in history. The Psalms have been a foundational text of several religions for thousands of years. In this book, Ker presents the Psalms alongside a discussion of their relevance and stories from modern history that serve to contextualize the teachings. The book does not include a discussion of every Psalm, it does however contain sections on more than 150 of the poems. The stories presented alongside the Psalms range greatly in origin, from tales of sinking ships in the 1800's to an account of a third century king reading the works while on his deathbed. The volume concludes with a detailed index listing all of the subjects discussed throughout the book. The Psalms in History and Biography is a novel way of presenting the Psalms. By using stories from different periods in history to demonstrate the power of the works, Ker has attempted to take these religious writings from the page into real life. Readers interested in the subject matter will surely find The Psalms in History and Biography to be an interesting insight and history of some of the foundational texts of modern religion. Excerpt from The Psalms, Vol. 1 Bible should obviously, first of all, be expository. I have tried to conform to that requirement, and have therefore found it necessary to leave questions of date and authorship all but untouched. They could not be adequately discussed in conjunction with Exposition. I venture to think that the deepest and most precious elements in the Psalms are very slightly affected by the answers to these questions, and that expository treat ment of the bulk of the Psalter may be separated from critical, Without condemning the former to incomplete ness. If I have erred in thus restricting the scope ot this volume, I have done so after due consideration; and am not Without hope that the restriction may com mend itself to some readers. Excerpt from Ten Studies in the Psalms There is, perhaps, no part of the Old Testament which speaks so simply and directly to the universal heart as the Psalter. Yet even the most familiar psalms come home to us with increased freshness and power when, by sympathetic study, we have traveled back to the world in which their writers stood, and learned to look out upon it with their eyes. The short studies in this volume are an attempt to interpret, in this way, a few of the psalms that deal with important aspects of the religious life, and to show their vital bearing upon the life of to-day. In their doubts, struggles, and aspirations, those ancient men are very near us, and they speak to us with an accent that is strangely modern. I have tried to make this plain in the course of the exposition, and to illustrate their kinship with us by quotation from modern writers. The treatment of the psalms here selected is expository. But, without. Being didactic or homiletic, I have at the same time sought to make it practically helpful, by gathering up the study of each psalm in a series of personal questions, which are intended both to carry the reader into the heart of the psalm, and also to enable him to search his own inner life. I desire here to express my obligation to Messrs. Charles Serib ner's Sons for their generous courtesy in allowing me to reprint, from my volume on The Messages of the Psalmists in The Mes sages of the Bible Series the paraphrase of the psalms here selected for study. Excerpt from The Psalms, Vol. 2 PSALM XXXIX. 1 I said, I will guard any ways, that I sin not with my tongue; I will put a muzzle on my mouth So long as the wicked His before me. 2 I made myself dumb in still submission, I kept silence joylessly, And my sorrow was stirred. 3 My heart was hot within me; Wile I mused the fire blazed up; I s ake with my tongue. 4 Make me, Jehovah, to know my end, And the measure of my days, what it is; Let me know how flecking I am. 5 Behold, as hand breadths hast Thou made my days, And my lifetime is as nothing before Thee; Surely nothing but a breath is every man, stand he ever so firm, Selah. 6 Surely every man goes about like a shadow; Surely for a breath do they make (such a stir); He heaps up (goods) and knows not who will gather them. 7 And now what wait I for, Lord? My hope - to Thee it goes. 8 From all my transgressions deliver me; Make me not a reproach of the fool. 9 I make myself dumb, I open not my mouth, For Tnou hast done (it). 10 Remove Thy stroke from me; I am wasted by the assault of Thy hand. 11 When with rebukes for iniquity Thou correctest a man, Like a moth Thou frayest away his gracetuness; Surely every man is (but) a breath. Excerpt from Christ and His Church in the Book of Psalms Few of the Books of Scripture are richer than the Book of Psalms, that Hymn-book for all times, as it has been called. There, says Luther, you look right down into the heart of saints, and behold all man ner of joys and joyous thoughts toward God and his love springing lustily into life Again, you look into the heart of saints as into death and hell! How gloomy and dark their mournful visions of God. An other has said, The Psalms teach me to prize a much tried life. And Tholuck (who gives these quotations) remarks, Songs which, like the Psalms, have stood the test of three thousand years, contain a germ for eternity. Excerpt from Commentary on the Psalms, Vol. 1 It is justly remarked, however, by Koester, that the suppo sitiou in question by no means requires us to hold that the Psalm is a late production, and probably composed by the col lector himself. The simplicity and freshness which characterize it are against this. That it must have been composed, at any rate, before Jeremiah, is evident from his imitation of it. A more determinate conclusion regarding the time of its composi tion, can only, since the Psalm itself furnishes no data, be de rived from ascertaining its relation to Psalm second.
