Excerpt from The Prominent Families of the United States of America, Vol. 1 The purpose and scope of this work need little explanation. The genealogies recorded in these volumes are those of extant families of the great American Republic, whose long and distinguished connexion with their country has made them part of its history, or whose descent from some ancient European house entitles them to be included in a publication of this nature. The armorials of families deducing their lineage from armigerous progenitors are given, but the mere possession of rightfully-borne Arms has in no case been regarded as an inevitable qualification for admission. There are many popular delusions, and not the least unfounded and absurd is that one which considers the bearing of officially authorized Arms to be the necessary condition of gentle descent; indeed, many of the oldest and most important families in England enjoy no such right. A few words as to the sources from which I have drawn my materials. I have endeavoured throughout to obey the sound axiom of never adducing inferior testimony where better could be had. Acting on this principle, I have lost no opportunity of having frequent recourse to the parish and other local registers, to testamentary documents, to the archives of public offices, to the records of nonconformist associations, to family papers, and to various collections of original manuscripts both in this country and in America. Where, as has often been the case, the original authorities were lost or inaccessible, I have relied only on what have appeared on careful examination to be trustworthy compilations. Nevertheless, I am fully conscious that many imperfections will be apparent to the critic of these pages, but in a work of this kind, where every line contains a name and a date, it seems hardly necessary to make the usual conventional apology for unavoidable mistakes. Excerpt from American Family Antiquity, Vol. 1: Being an Account of the Origin and Progress of American Families, Traced From Their Progenitors in This Country, Connected With Their History Abroad It is therefore clear that the History of Individual Families is. In many cases, of greater Antiquity, and goes to a more early period than that of the States to which they belong, which one, at first sight, would consider as an assertion highly absurd and ridiculous. Excerpt from History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 IN presenting to the public a new history or the states, the indulgence of the reader is asked to a few preliminary remarks respecting the object had in view in these volumes, and the claims which they have upon the attention of the American people. The one great object ever before me has been to present a truthful, impartial, and readable narrative of the origin, rise, and progress of that mighty Republic which, extending from ocean to ocean, is destined to assume yet higher rank, and to wield larger and larger influence among the family of nations. Having an entire and thorough conviction of the superintending care and control of Divine Providence in our country's affairs; having no ends to gain but those of truth and right having no theories to establish. No partisan views or wishes to gratify I have honestly endeavored to ascertain what the truth is, and then to set it forth as clearly, and as fully, as was possible within the limits to which I was restricted. Mere speculations on historic points, I have avoided; attempts to penetrate or pronounce upon the motives of men and nations, beyond what may be regarded as plainly and fairly deducible from their acts, I have deemed of little value; and, in general, I have preferred to leave the intelligent reader to draw his own con elusion from an impartial presentation of the facts and circumstances of the case. At the same time, in cases of difficulty or doubt, I have carefully and conscientiously sought to compare and sift conflicting accounts, and to arrive at that which seemed to be the nearest approximation to the truth which, probably, under the circumstances, can now be attained. Excerpt from A Social History of the American Family From, Vol. 1: Colonial Times to the Present In common with the best recent historical works, due place has been given to the Economic Interpretation, but with studied avoidance of fantastic exaggeration. The true claims of the dispassionate historical spirit have been held steadily in view. If it seem to the reader that undue attention has been given to patho logical abnormalities, he should bear in mind that the American history with which most readers are familiar has been written by litterateurs or historians with little perspective save that which inheres in loyalty to the established order, in the attenuated atmosphere of the middle class, or in the desire to glorify the past, it may be of New England with its ancestral worthies, or of some other section in the romantic days. Those trained in the literature of such shallow schools naturally find it hard to put aside prepossessions and to refrain from confounding the disclosures of science with the product of the muck-raker.
