This proceedings volume of the 3rd International Workshop on Quantum Aspects of Beam Physics, presents the latest advances in beam dynamics. The frontiers of beam research point to increasingly high energy, greater brightness and lower emittance beams with ever-increasing particle species. These demands have triggered a rapidly growing number of beam phenomena that involve quantum effects. In addition to the more established topics, this volume covers topics on high energy-density particle and photon beams for laboratory astrophysics investigations, as well as the application of beam physics expertise to astrophysics studies. Other exciting new topics are the physics of ultra-cold or condensed beams, such as the “crystalline beams” and the Bose-Einstein condensate “atom lasers”.This book will be a valuable source of reference to readers interested in the interdisciplinary frontiers of “quantum beam physics” that involve beam physics, particle physics, laser science, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear and atomic physics. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings® (ISTP® / ISI Proceedings)• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)• CC Proceedings — Engineering & Physical Sciences

This proceedings volume records the advances in quantum beam physics since the first meeting in Monterey (1998). In addition to further progress regarding quantum effects in beam dynamics, photon-electron interaction in beam handling, beam phenomena under strong fields, and quantum methodologies in beam physics, the newly introduced topics — the physics of condensed beams as well as astro-beam physics and laboratory astrophysics — have also been well documented by world experts in the field. This book should be a valuable reference to those who are interested in the joint frontiers of beam physics and other fields such as astrophysics and condensed matter physics.

The frontiers of beam research point to increasingly high energy, greater brightness and lower emittance beams with ever-increasing particle species. These demands in turn have triggered a rapidly growing number of beam phenomena that involve quantum effects. Concurrently, the violent accelerations which are becoming available through novel accelerator research may, perhaps, help to investigate fundamental physics associated with general relativity. In view of these exciting developments and the important role they may play in the next century, the world's first conference on the "Quantum Aspects of Beam Physics", held at Monterey, California, in January 1998, attracted a broad spectrum of experts from beam physics, particle physics, laser science, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear and atomic physics. At the end of the meeting, history had been made, and the term "quantum beam physics" was born.

This book contains the proceedings of the 1999 ICFA workshop on the physics of high brightness beams. The workshop took a snapshot in time of a fast moving, interdisciplinary field driven by advanced applications such as high gradient, high energy physics linear colliders, high gain free electron lasers, heavy ion fusion, and transmutation of nuclear materials. While the field of high brightness beam physics has traditionally been divided into disparate electron and heavy ion communities, the workshop brought the two types of researchers together, so that a sharing of insights and methods could be achieved. Thus, this book represents a unifying step in the development of the diverse fascinating discipline of high brightness beam physics, with its challenges rooted in collective, nonlinear particle motion and ultra-high electromagnetic energy density.

A riveting new science fiction novel from the writer who twice won the Philip K. Dick Award for best SF novel.Bela and Paul, two wild young mathematicians, are friends and roommates, and in love with the same woman, who happens to be Alma, Bela's girlfriend. They fight it out by changing reality using cutting edge math, to change who gets the girl. The contemporary world they live in is not quite this one, but much like Berkeley, California, and the two graduate students are trying to finish their degrees and get jobs. It doesn't help that their unpredictable advisor Roland is a mad mathematical genius who has figured out a way to predict isolated and specific bits of the future that can cause a lot of trouble. . .and he's starting to see monsters in mirrors. Bela and Paul start to mess around with reality, and when that happens, all heaven and hell break loose. Those monsters of Roland's were really there, but who are they? This novel is a romantic comedy with a whole corkscrew of SF twists. At the publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management software (DRM) applied.

Research and development in the terahertz portion of the electromagnetic spectrum has expanded very rapidly during the past fifteen years due to major advances in sources, detectors and instrumentation. Many scientists and engineers are entering the field and this volume offers a comprehensive and integrated treatment of all aspects of terahertz technology. The three authors, who have been active researchers in this region over a number of years, have designed Terahertz Techniques to be both a general introduction to the subject and a definitive reference resource for all those involved in this exciting research area.

Personalized medicine employing patient-based tailor-made therapeutic drugs is taking over treatment paradigms in a variety of ?elds in oncology and the central nervous system. The success of such therapies is mainly dependent on ef?cacious therapeutic drugs and a selective imaging probe for identi?cation of potential responders as well as therapy monitoring for an early bene?t assessment. Molecular imaging (MI) is based on the selective and speci?c interaction of a molecular probe with a biological target which is visualized through nuclear, magnetic resonance, near infrared or other methods. Therefore it is the method of choice for patient selection and therapy monitoring as well as for speci?c e- point monitoring in modern drug development. PET (positron emitting tomography), a nuclear medical imaging modality, is ideally suited to produce three-dimensional images of various targets or processes. The rapidly increasing demand for highly selective probes for MI strongly pushes the development of new PET tracers and PET chemistry. ‘PET chemistry’ can be de?ned as the study of positron-emitting compounds regarding their synthesis, structure, composition, reactivity, nuclear properties and processes and their properties in natural and - natural environments. In practice PET chemistry is strongly in?uenced by the unique properties of the radioisotopes used (e. g. , half-life, che- cal reactivity, etc. ) and integrates scienti?c aspects of nuclear-, organic-, inorganic- and biochemistry.
