This treatise must not be taken for anything but what it really is, namely (1) a practical and scientific guide to the judicious use of white zinc (2) a Sketch of its fluctuating history and more especially (3) as complete an exposition as possible of the indispensable technical knowledge required by practical men to understand this white pig ment well, SO as to be able to demand of it all it is capable of doing, and not to require of it what it cannot do. Excerpt from Oxide of Zinc: Its Nature, Properties and Uses, With Special Reference to the Making and Application of Paint It is probably not too much to assert that no pigment has increased more rapidly in use during recent years than has zinc oxide or as it is frequently called zinc white. Several reasons have con tributed to this result, the two most important being, first, the great hygienic value of the material, the fact that it is quite non-poisonous, and secondly, its great durability in situations which are very destructive to other pigments, notably white lead. The last of these points is ably dealt with in this little volume by the author, Mr J. Cruickshank Smith, and he, as an expert paint technologist of wide experience, clearly shows, in an impartial manner, that zinc oxide possesses other excellent qualities when used in a paint either by itself or in combination with other pigments.
