Excerpt from The Poetical Works of John Gay, Vol. 2 Gay's published translations are confined to portions of Ovid's Metamorphoses. His version of the first fable of the Sixth Book - Arachne in Araneam mutata - originally appeared in a Miscellany, published by Lintot in 1719, which, by the way, also contained the first sketch of Pope's Rape of the Lock. His translations from the Ninth Book were made for the English edition of the Metamorphoses brought out by Sir Samuel Garth in 1717. London: Printed for Jacob Tonson at Shakespeare's Head over-against Katherine Street in the Strand. MDCCXVII.') This 'noble folio' also contained versions by Dryden (Book I.), Addison (Books II. and III.), Maynwaring, Croxall, Rowe, Tate, and Garth himself. Pope contributed a metrical version of one of the fables of the Ninth Book - Dryope in Loton transormatur - which will be found in the original edition between Gay's 'Transformation of Galanthis, ' and his 'Story of Iolaus'. The translations here given were not included by Gay in any collected edition of his works; but they find a place in Bell's four-volume edition(1773), though their source is not in any way indicated.
