Excerpt from The Pilgrim Faith In a few years the three-hundredth anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth will be celebrated. In anticipation of this event, and for its own sake as well, it is fitting that an estimate of the achievements of the Congregationalists in America and of their representatives in foreign lands should be made. This is undertaken in the following pages. No attempt has been made to write a history of the churches that hold the Pilgrim Faith nor to discuss the form of church government which they maintained. Nor has the subject been treated exhaustively. Many events and names have been omitted, not because they have been forgotten, but on account of space limitations. We have endeavored to give prominence to those movements and leaders which represent in a typical way the genius of the Pilgrim Faith and exemplify its contribution to the spiritual history of the last three centuries. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Pilgrim Essays on Religion A Volume of collected papers must have some central idea, and perhaps that central idea is given clearly enough in the title and in the article that stands first. All the sections of the book turn upon the spiritual life, and on that interpretation of it which we find in the New Testament, in its precursors and in those who in art and life have developed and elucidated it. The study of Jeremiah appeared in the Expositor. "The Meaning of Christmas Day" was written at the request of the Y.M.C.A. for distribution in the British Army, and it was reprinted, I understand, by the wish of the American Y.M.C.A. for the American Expeditionary Force. Two other papers in a somewhat different form were in a small booklet, once published by the Student Christian Movement under the title of Vocation, and now out of print. Others rest on contributions to the Nation and other journals, but have been completely rewritten. Four at any rate have not been in my writing before. This enduring work of Russian spirituality has charmed countless people with its tale of a nineteenth-century peasant's quest for the secret of prayer. Readers follow this anonymous pilgrim as he treks over the Steppes in search of the answer to the one compelling question: How does one pray constantly? Through his journeys, and under the tutelage of a spiritual father, he becomes gradually more open to the promptings of God, and sees joy and plenty wherever he goes. Ultimately, he discovers the different meanings and methods of prayer as he travels to his ultimate destination, Jerusalem. The Way of a Pilgrim is a humble story ripe for renewed appreciation today. The recent changes in Russia have revealed the great religious traditions of that land, and this work, freshly translated for modern times, is among the finest examples of those centuries-old traditions.

Excerpt from Zion's Pilgrim It was not until that I had passed a very considerable portion of time in the life of man, that I felt the fall conviction of my being but a stranger and a pilgrim upon the earth. And it becomes even now, one of the most astonishing circumstances, in the new view of things which are continually opening before me, that there should have been so much ignorance in my mind by nature, on a subject, which in itself appears so exceedingly plain and evident. Not that I was altogether void of apprehension, that the present life formed a bounded prospect. But yet my ideas were like those of the great mass of awakened characters, who believe as though they believed not; and who, though ready enough to confess in the general, that man is but a dying creature, yet in the particular instance, as it concerns themselves, live as though they never thought to die. I pause - in the moment of recollection, to look back upon the whirlpool, in which for so many years I was hurried on by the unceasing current! unconscious of the perilous situation in which I then moves, and unconcerned at what I saw of the sudden departure of those around me, swallowed up in the vortex! In Pilgrim Letters, Curtis Freeman takes disciples on a contemporary journey into an ancient faith. The book is a series of letters written by "Interpreter" to "Pilgrim" that provide "instruction in the basic teaching of Christ" for candidates preparing to be baptized. The letters are framed by a short catechism based on the six principles enumerated in Hebrews 6:1-2--(1) repentance, (2) faith, (3) baptism, (4) laying on of hands, (5) resurrection, and (6) eternal judgment. The letters lead Pilgrim (the disciple/catechumen/baptismal candidate) step by step through the basics of Christian faith. Each letter explores one of the principles by providing a simple explanation and setting the practice within a broad biblical, historical, and theological context. The theological tenor of the letters is evangelical-catholic, free church-ecumenical, and ancient-future. A set of discussion questions follows each letter as does a short bibliography for further reading. Each letter begins with an image from William Blake's illustrations of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress and exemplifying the subject of the letter, followed by an epigraph from the story that fits into the themes of the catechism.
