Excerpt from The Philippine Journal of Science, 1908, Vol. 3: A General Science This paper, embodying results of work during three weeks spent in geologic-reconnaissance in the Batanes Islands, is intended to be pre liminary to an article which will deal more fully with the geology and petrography of this group; hence the problems of structural geology will be in the main reserved for the later discussion and I Shall here confine myself principally to the physiography. Excerpt from The Philippine Journal of Science, 1916, Vol. 11: Section D, General Biology, Ethnology, and Anthropology In many Of the early collections of Philippine insects exact localities were not recorded. The term Manila or Manille in many cases was used synonymously with Philippines. This erroneous use of the term Manila as a geographic designation was due in part to insufficient data supplied by collectors and in part to the fact that the record of a more precise locality was not considered of importance. Most of the botanical as well as zoological specimens which are recorded as from Manila did in fact come from Manila, but many of them were collected a long way from that city. The use of Philippines as a locality is also misleading and is too indefinite for a region comprising some three thousand islands, where in numerous instances species are exceedingly local in occurrence. In view of those facts an exact record for each species, if represented in the Bureau of Science collection, is given in the following order: Island, province, town, mountain or river, number, and collector. The names of islands are printed in capitals and small capitals. The numbers are those of accessions of specimens in the Bureau of Science collection. The names of collectors are in italics. An asterisk following the name of a species indicates that the species is known to be of economic importance, and that some thing about it is to be found in the appendix to this catalogue. A dagger indicates that the species is represented in my private collection. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Philippine Journal of Science, Vol. 13: 1918 Recent developments in water analysis have emphasized the importance of making examinations at the source whenever possible. The work Of the Bureau of Science has Shown the need of field investigations and the peculiar applicability Of field methods to Philippine conditions. Accordingly field work has been made one of the most important features of our study of water supplies. Owing to the comparative isolation of the Philippines, the great distance from scientific or manufacturing centers, and the consequent loss of time when apparatus and supplies are pro cured from abroad, we have found it necessary, to a large extent, to build our own apparatus, to prepare our own reagents for field use, and to devise and adapt methods suitable to our needs. The field work of the Bureau Of Science has been carried on for three years. Because of the importance of field methods at the present time, and because workers in as isolated places as the Philippines will continue to be dependent, in a great measure, on their own resources, we have thought it advisable to describe our field methods and apparatus in detail. Excerpt from The Philippine Journal of Science, Vol. 11: Section C. Botany This paper is based almost wholly on material recently collected in Sorsogon Province, Luzon, a region in which very little field work has been prosecuted in botany since the exploration of that province by Haenke, one of the botanists of the Malaspina Expedition, in about the year 1792. The field work was done by Maximo Ramos, who spent from July 22, 1915, to September 14, 1915, in Sorsogon, working on Bulusan Volcano, Mount Kililibong, Mount Pocdal, Mount Bogacaua, Mount Lalao, and at Lake Polog. In this time he collected about four hundred numbers of flowering plants and ferns, of which a number, on examination, prove to be undescribed species. In addition to the forty previously undescribed forms considered in this paper, Mr. Elmer has indicated nineteen additional sheets of this collection as representing new species, presumably in those cases where material collected by Ramos matches material collected by himself in his exploration of Sorsogon subsequent to Ramos's trip. Some material, on account of inadequate specimens, immature flowers, or lack of flowers or fruits, still remains to be considered at a later date when the species shall have been collected again.
