Excerpt from The Peril of Home Rule As an Ulsterman, representing an Ulster con stituency, and deeply interested in the welfare of my native land, as well as in the continued prosperity d the United Kingdom, of which she is still happily an integral part, and being convinced that the estab lishment of Home Rule means disaster both to Ireland and to the great British Empire, I have c endeavoured in this little volume to set forth, in as brief a space as possible, the many arguments which seem to me conclusive against such a disastrous policy. The figures given in the book are up to date, and may prove of value to its readers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Popular Perils: Cabin Home Papers This, and more, we may imagine the fathers saying. Looking into the not distant future they might truly declare that the American constitution will become the fundamental law of all the nations. The author has no quarrel with political parties. The parties are good enough. But party leaders, bid their master, the people, change their minds. It is with false leaders the people have to deal. In obedience to the demands of plutocracy, they would take from the people the control of the ballot box, and they would hold our finance to the gold standard. These two wrongs must be resisted. The accomplishment of either is slavery to the producers. The people must control existing parties or destroy them. A sitting justice reflects upon the authority of the Supreme CourtÑhow that authority was gained and how measures to restructure the Court could undermine both the Court and the constitutional system of checks and balances that depends on it. A growing chorus of officials and commentators argues that the Supreme Court has become too political. On this view the confirmation process is just an exercise in partisan agenda-setting, and the jurists are no more than Òpoliticians in robesÓÑtheir ostensibly neutral judicial philosophies mere camouflage for conservative or liberal convictions. Stephen Breyer, drawing upon his experience as a Supreme Court justice, sounds a cautionary note. Mindful of the CourtÕs history, he suggests that the judiciaryÕs hard-won authority could be marred by reforms premised on the assumption of ideological bias. Having, as Hamilton observed, Òno influence over either the sword or the purse,Ó the Court earned its authority by making decisions that have, over time, increased the publicÕs trust. If public trust is now in decline, one part of the solution is to promote better understandings of how the judiciary actually works: how judges adhere to their oaths and how they try to avoid considerations of politics and popularity. Breyer warns that political intervention could itself further erode public trust. Without the publicÕs trust, the Court would no longer be able to act as a check on the other branches of government or as a guarantor of the rule of law, risking serious harm to our constitutional system.

This anthology takes a broad approach to ethics, incorporating traditional topics and texts while bringing in voices and themes that are too often excluded. A substantial section on ethical theory is provided, as are readings on topics such as oppression, sex, identity, the environment, life and death, war and terror, and caring for others. Accessible introductions and discussion questions are included throughout to contextualize material for the student reader without playing favorites among the positions at issue.

Excerpt from Perils of Home Rule: A Speech Delivered at a Meeting of the General Synod of the Church of Ireland, on Tuesday, March 14th, 1893 As loyal subjects of the great British Empire, we earnestly protest against its threatened disintegration, and call on our fellow-subjects in England, Scotland, and Wales to join us in resisting a measure that must inevitably and irrevocably effect the dismemberment of the Empire, and the consequent ruin of our position and influence among the nations.
