"In December 2015, the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR), Cape Town, South Africa, hosted about 30 key -- mainly South Sudanese -- civil society activists and scholars, as well as senior officials from South Africa and major external partners, including the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN), to reflect on the record of, and prospects for, civil society in peacemaking and peacebuilding efforts in South Sudan. The seminar had six key objectives: first, to understand the challenges facing South Sudanese civil society in the context of the country's conflict; second, to identify lessons from past experiences of South Sudanese peace processes that can assist local civil society organisations to contribute more effectively to peacebuilding efforts; third, to reflect on the role of, and prospects for, civil society in the dissemination and implementation of the August 2015 Addis Ababa peace agreement, as well as in the resolution of local conflicts; fourth, to assist South Sudanese civil society in developing peacebuilding strategies that can accommodate the disparate needs of local communities across South Sudan; fifth, to explore ways of strengthening civil society engagement with transitional justice, reconciliation, and gender equality as key aspects of peacebuilding efforts in the country; and sixth, to identify ways in which external actors can support South Sudanese civil society more effectively"--Publisher's web site.

Five main research themes emerge from its 20 chapters: · The roles of environmental peacemaking, environmental justice, ecological education and eco-ethics in helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change · Peacebuilding by CSOs after violent conflicts, with particular reference to accountability, reconciliation and healing · CSO involvement in democratic processes and political transition after violent conflicts · Relationships between local CSOs and their foreign funders and the interactions between CSOs and the African Union's peace and security architecture. · The particular role of faith-based CSOs The book underlines the centrality of dialogue to African peacebuilding and the indigenous wisdom and philosophies on which it is based. "In December 2016, the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR), Cape Town, South Africa, hosted about 30 policymakers, academics, and civil society actors to reflect critically upon the challenges of, and prospects for, peacebuilding in South Sudan; and to examine the role of major external actors in supporting local and national peace processes. The seminar had six key objectives: first, to identify the main challenges facing South Sudan's Transitional Government of National Unity; second, to examine the challenges of, and prospects for, implementing the August 2015 Addis Ababa peace agreement; third, to assess the human rights situation in South Sudan, with a view to identifying more effective ways to protect and promote such rights meaningfully, while addressing their violations; fourth, to explore ways of strengthening local, national, and international engagement with issues related to gender and women's empowerment as key aspects of conflict management and peacebuilding; fifth, to understand the challenges facing South Sudanese civil society and to assist the sector in identifying opportunities for peacebuilding, in the context of the current conflict; and sixth, to assess the role of key external actors in South Sudan such as the United Nations, the United States, and China, with a view to identifying concrete ways in which they can support conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts in the country more effectively"--Publisher description. This book seeks to examine how successful models of building 'peace from within' in the African context function. It draws emerging lessons to provide critical recommendations on policy, practice and academia - our primary audience. While there are numerous examples of failures of conflict resolution in Africa, shown by intractable conflict axes, less attention is paid to successes. While acknowledging the challenges that exist, this edited volume provides positive examples of building peace from within in fragile contexts through many forms of initiatives and actions at different levels: community-based (through individual and/or collective local peace initiatives), government (through ministries and/or departments), and regional (through external and/or multilateral infrastructure for peace). As a guiding principle the notion of building peace from within draws from the idea of community regeneration, which describes voluntary and peaceful activities of grassroots actors that reflect their broader interests of building peaceful communities and existence.

Most of the papers in this book were presented during the 9th International South Sudan and Sudan Studies Conference of the Sudan Studies Association USA and the Sudan Studies Society UK. 150 scholars from numerous academic disciplines, experts in conflict transformation and development, staff of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), former and current senior officers from ministries and military institutions from Sudan, South Sudan, and seventeen further countries participated in the conference. They engaged in vivid discussions on historical and recent cleavages in the societies of Sudan and South Sudan, inequality and exclusion in numerous variations, and on rapid social change accompanied by urbanisation and land conflicts. The severe economic crisis following the separation and the importance of creating political solutions instead of using technical approaches to work on the multitude of challenges affecting each of the two countries and the interrelations between them were also scrutinised. The participants intensely exchanged views and experiences on the difficulties and successes in taking responsibility rather than being dependent on foreign assistance. Discussions revealed strong potentials in both societies to overcome such problems; to initiate processes of reconciliation, and to consolidate peace. They shed light on the complex processes of nation-building and the creation of meaningful constitutions. This book attempts to capture at least some of this multitude of insights and aspects that had shaped the conference.
