Excerpt from The Patrician, Vol. 1 The origin of the titles of honour which are now held by the peers of the British Empire may be traced to the feudal institutions; and for their introduction into this country we are indebted to the Normans. Originally, when a tract of land was granted by a sovereign prince to one of his followers to be held by military or other service, it was called a feudum nobile, and conferred nobility on the possessor. Excerpt from Plebeians and Patricians, Vol. 1 of 2: By the Author of "Old Maids," "Old Bachelors," &C. &C Forty-eight years ago, the parish of Shawton forming one of the north eastern extremities of Cheshire, was as beautiful and picturesque in its appearance, as the most enthusiastic lover of nature could desire. The summer sun shone down upon it, and upon its quiet cottages and comfortable farmhouses, undimmed, save by a few silvery clouds; and the birds, the streams, and the trees waved and sung in the bright sky, with nothing near them to mar their beauty. In one of these farm-houses the family to which our story refers were, on the 2d of July, 1784, assembled in deep and anxious consultation. They had just returned from attending the last rites of their protector and father, John Manford, or, as he was more generally called "Honest John." He had died full of years, and at a right time for his own comfort, though at a very wrong one for that of his family; which consisted of a wife, three sons, and two daughters. Classic Speedsters: The Cars, The Times, and The Characters Who Drove Them chronicles the most significant vehicles ever to have traveled American roads and racetracks. Speedsters were the pizzazz cars of their era. Speedsters were owned by entertainers, captains of industry, the wealthy, and in some cases, the everyday guy or gal. They were often expensive, but always fast and sexy. Speedsters were America's first sports cars. Each chapter frames the birth and evolution of a company that produced a speedster model in its lineup and includes a biography of a famous owner of the period. This book traces the journey of the speedster concept across several time periods and among twelve automotive companies. It answers three fundamental questions:· Why were these cars so important and influential?· Why did so many prominent people own them?· What message do they have for modern design?

Excerpt from Livy, Vol. 4: Edited for the Syndics of the University Press The [ex Caflulez'a (cc. 1 - 6 we must remember that where wmzez'um did not exist between two sets of people, full and regular marriage could not be effected between two members of such sets. This, in effect, meant that the children of such a marriage succeeded to the position of the inferior parent only. The marriage was not quite in the modern sense illegal. The children were not what we should call illegitimate, provi ded the parents were free persons. The father held the same position towards them as he would have done if the marriage were an equal one. But the rule that children followed the rank of the father applied only where the father was plebeian. If a patrician married a plebeian woman, he forfeited all patrician rights for the children of such a union. Publius Clodius Pulcher was a prominent political figure during the last years of the Roman Republic. Born into an illustrious patrician family, his early career was sullied by military failures and especially by the scandal that resulted from his allegedly disguising himself as a woman in order to sneak into a forbidden religious ceremony in the hope of seducing Caesar's wife. Clodius survived this disgrace, however, and emerged as a major political force. He renounced his patrician status and was elected tribune of the people. As tribune, he pursued an ambitious legislative agenda, winning the loyalties of the common people of Rome to such a degree that he was soon able to summon forceful, even violent, demonstrations on his own behalf. The first modern, comprehensive biography of Clodius, The Patrician Tribune traces his career from its earliest stages until its end in 52 B.C., when he was murdered by a political rival. Jeffrey Tatum explores Clodius's political successes, as well as the limitations of his popular strategies, within the broader context of Roman political practices. In the process, Tatum illuminates the relationship between the political contests of Rome's elite and the daily struggles of Rome's urban poor.
