Excerpt from The Three Clerks, Vol. 1: A Novel All the English world knows, or knows of, that branch of the Civil Service which is popularly called the Weights and Measures. Every inhabi tant of London, and every casual visitor there, has admired the handsome edifice which gene rally goes by that name, and which stands so conspicuously confronting the Treasury Cham bers. It must be owned that we have but a slip-slop way of christening our public build ings. When a man tells us that he called on a friend at the horse-guards, or looked in at the Navy Pay, or dropped a ticket at the Woods and Forests, we put up with the accustomed sounds, though they are in themselves, perhaps, indefen sible The Board of Commissioners for Regu lating Weights and Measures, and the Ofiice vol. Excerpt from The Parish Clerk Was metamorphosed into pews Which still their ancient nature keep By lodging folks disposed to sleep. The squire's pew was a wondrous structure, with its own special fire-place, the fire in which the old gentle man used to poke vigorously when the parson was too long in preaching. It was amply furnished, this squire's pew, with arm-chairs and comfortable seats and stools and books. Such a pew all furnished and adorned did a worthy clerk point out to the witty Bishop of Oxford, Bishop Wilberforce, with much pride and satisfaction. If there be ought your lordship can mention to mak' it better, I'm sure Squire will no mind gettin' on it. Excerpt from The Three Clerks, Vol. 3 of 3: A Novel WE will now go back for a while to Hampton. The author, for one, does so with pleasure. Though those who dwell there be not angels, yet it is better to live with the Woodwards and Harry Norman, with Uncle Bat, or even with the un fortunate Charley, than with such as Alaric and Undy Scott. The man who is ever looking after money is fitting company only for the devils, of whom, indeed, he is already one. But Charley cannot any longer be called one of the cottage circle. It was now the end of October, and since the day of his arrest he had not yet been there. He had not been asked; nor would he go uninvited, as after what had passed at Hampton Court Bridge he surely might have done. Excerpt from The Parish Choir, or Church Music Book, 1849, Vol. 3 In other words, the originators of the Parish Choir did not desire to introduce fine, enchanting, dramatic music, such as might be executed by professionals from the concert-room or theatre, who draw their curtain, sing their florid anthem, and retire from the church as soon as their performance is over; nor yet to fill the churches with irreverent crowds of listeners. Their desire was to see the churches filled with devout crowds of worshippers, and to provide and make popular 3. System of ecclesiastical music, such as the humblest could join in, while it should be calculated, not for the mere amusement of man, but for the worship of God. This then, in short, was our object to find out, publish, popularize, explain, and recommend the adoption of that system of music, which should be most suited to the genius of the. English Prayer Book, and most in accordance with the entire system of the Reformed English Church. And as on the very face of the Prayer Book it is evident that our service is not a mere vicarious intercession to be performed by priest, or by priest and parish-clerk, or quire; that the people are not meant to sit as silent listeners, but themselves to join vocally, openly, and audibly, or even loudly in the devotions of the Church, so it is evident that no system of ecclesiastical music can be in accordance with the genius of the English Church, which does not recognize this duty and this right of the laity throughout the entire service; and which does not provide means whereby their united audible worship may be celebrated with one voice, with decency and reverence.
