It's Time to Say "Yes" to the Mess We've all heard the old adage "The only constant is change," but how do we actually respond to the changes that come at us from all sides? From satisfying work to sudden unemployment. From a happy marriage to a hurtful divorce. From caring for the kids to caring for an aging parent. These are just a few of the countless ways that life hurls us into the chaos of change, where our certainties are shaken and our faith may even begin to falter. But what if we saw the chaos—the “mess”—of our lives not as something to fear or eschew, but as something to be embraced? In The Other Side of Chaos, best-selling author Margaret Silf looks closely at the subject of chaos—and the intrinsic transition it brings—through the lens of Christian spirituality. Through Scripture stories and verses, personal accounts, and other anecdotes, Silf helps us develop an authentic “spirituality of transition” that leads us to live out life’s changes constructively, creatively, and confidently. Ultimately, The Other Side of Chaos gives us the courage to trust God when life is breaking down and to see our messes not as something to be rescued from, but as something that will help us break through to a place where God makes all things new. A lawyer turned drug counselor examines the disruption many families endure when addiction impacts their lives. Based in part on her own family’s journey, Ellen Van Vechten explains the science of addiction, the theory of treatment, and the Twelve-Step model of recovery, providing sensible information and tips for reasoned action in support of a loved one while fostering personal growth and recovery. Powerlessness over another's addiction has a caustic effect on the family. Too often parents and partners equate "letting go" with "giving up." While acceptance of a lack of control is essential to coping with the disease within the family system, there is nothing passive about supporting a partner or child on their journey to recovery. This concept is the foundation of Van Vechten's original approach to empower individuals with knowledge, which when coupled with acceptance allows any family dealing with active addiction to make thoughtful and reasoned decisions to facilitate the recovery of both their loves ones and themselves.

Written in the 1980s by one of the fathers of chaos theory, Otto E. Rössler, the manuscript presented in this volume eventually never got published. Almost 40 years later, it remains astonishingly at the forefront of knowledge about chaos theory and many of the examples discussed have never been published elsewhere. The manuscript has now been edited by Christophe Letellier - involved in chaos theory for almost three decades himself, as well as being active in the history of sciences - with a minimum of changes to the original text. Finally released for the benefit of specialists and non-specialists alike, this book is equally interesting from the historical and the scientific points of view: an unconventionally modern approach to chaos theory, it can be read as a classic introduction and short monograph as well as a collection of original insights into advanced topics from this field.

Chaos – Tales of the heart is an Anthology that comprises two parts, each dealing with a different topic. The first part portrays several takes on “Chaos” and dives into in-depth narratives of the same. The second part brings forth “Tales of the heart” – depictions in the form of words and pictures. In the former, folks describe Chaos as they see it – Societal, Mental, Psychological, Philosophical, Circumstantial, etc. in, formal, narrative, poetic, satirical, comedic, and descriptive styles. Each author’s account gives a new perspective on how Chaotic things were, are, or can be. This section of the book focuses on matters that may not always be said out loud by most people, owing to the fear of being viewed as weak or insecure. Contrary to the immediate meaning – a physical manifestation of unrest and disorder – Chaos can erupt from within a person and still stay hidden under the surface, causing the same or more damage than its physical counterpart. This emotion can exist under the façade of calm, undetected for the most part. Chaos can make or break. It can incite action and can cease it. It can be a powerful tool if one knows how to wield it. In the latter, people pour their hearts out in the form of fables, poems, and pictures. They talk about personal and social aspects of how the heart perceives things. This section of the book also renders the adage “A picture is worth a thousand words” with moments captured to perfection by budding photographers. Talking about how one’s feeling, can prove easier said than done. Societal conceptions of what should and shouldn’t be talked about can seriously maim one’s self-confidence to the point where one simply stops talking altogether. More often than not, pictures and photos are judged based on how beautiful and perfect they are rather than what they are trying to illustrate. While the former approach isn’t entirely wrong, it does, however, impose unrealistic restrictions on what “beauty” should be. The heart can be made light and airy, metaphorically speaking, provided one finds a way to lighten the load it bears.
