DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Numismatic Chronicle and Journal of the Royal Numismatic Society, Vol. 15 The article of M. J. P. Six on "Monnaies Lyciennes," in the Revue Numismatique for 1886 and 1887, first systematized the study of the early coinage of Lycia, the foundation of which had already been laid by Sir Charles Fellows. Since then the only important contribution to the subject has been made by M.Babelon, in the last volume of the Catalogue des Monnaies grecques in the Bibliotheque Rationale. M. Babelon appears to have accepted in the main the chronological arrangement of M. Six. The fact that since 1887 a number of new coins have come to light must be my excuse for attempting a rearrangement of the chronological relations of the various series. I have approached this task mainly with a view to setting forth the numismatic evidence, independently of that of inscriptions.
